Short description:

The course pertains to the issues of the social work perceived as the type of social practice, that besides technical craft relies on values in equal measure. Reflection on the conditions and features of ethical practice of the social work requires review of such key issues as axiology of social welfare, axiology of social work, norms of ethical conduct and the question of their codification, ethical dilemmas in social work.

Full description:

Issues covered during the course relate to the problems of ethical and responsible, professional help. All types of professional relationships maintained by a social worker (with the clients, co-workers, superiors) are subjected to the analysis, along with discussion of fundamental values, norms of ethical conduct and typical ethical dilemmas of these relationships. Additionally, questions of unique ideology of social work – characteristic that defines specificity of social work among other helping professions – are analyzed. Also features of "helping professional", which guarantee ethical practice of social work, are covered during the course.

After realization of the course student will be able to:

- recognize and explain ethical requirements related to the professional practice of social work,

- analyze ethical problems of this professional function and recognize their sources

- justify his/her own attitude towards problems that provoke frequent ethical controversies

test of understanding of the problems covered during the course, ability to recognize and explain ethical properties of social work, ability to justify personal attitude
