Basics of Sociology

obligatory courses

The aim of the lecture is to draw the perspective of the contemporary issues of sociology, creation of the backgrounds for the study of various sociological issues, introduction to the most important sociological issues. The aim of the workshops - analysis of the writings and issues under the tutorship of the lecturers.

Introductory topics: origin of the sociology as a discipline of humanistic. Polish sociology on the background of historical events. Sociology as a humanistic discipline, a human from the perspective of humanistic and natural sciences. Socialization processes, sociobiology vs. Social sciences. Sociological view on the cultural issues. Sociology vs. Cultural anthropology. Creation of culture under the influence of certain social conditions on the example of S. Czarnowski conceptions. Social bonds, social roles and social groups. Conflicts of roles, consequences of participation of an individual in various groups and performing various social roles. Groups of reference - kinds and influence on an individual. Issues of a nation European history of this sociological phenomenon, specifics of national bonds, xenophobia, national conflicts. Social stereotypes and their meaning for the processes of shaping an image. Referencing the general issues of state to Polish characteristics. Human personality from the sociological perspective, creation of personality under the influence of certain social conditions by the example of the theory of authoritarian personality. Educational style vs. Personality (human types) on the example of the conception of F. Znaniecki. Social structure with the emphasis to the conception of Stanisław Ossowski. Classes, strata, social status, incommensurability of status dimensions, composition and decomposition of status factors. Middle class and its attributed role in the processes of the stabilization of democratic systems of power. Marxist elements of the class theory. Social structure of the contemporary societies with the emphasis on the Polish society.Polish society in the post-war era, discussions on the diagnosis of various times of the era, especially PRL controversies. In this context the issue of totalitarianism. Different conceptions on totalitarianism. Totalitarian state and the total institutions of E. Goffman. Processes of state transformations: the decline of communist system, difficulties in the shaping of new political system, the notion of "civil society" and its ambiguity. Contemporary Polish society in the view of empirical research and theoretical reflection. Sociological notion of social problems - pathology and norm. Corruption, its social backgrounds and possible implications.
