The analyzed problems: 1) formation of public opinion during campaign (description of social situation using public opinion polls), 2) basic determinants of political participation and preferences (bivariate analysis), 3) analysis of official electoral data (exploratory analysis), 4) changes in opinion (panel data), 5) special analysis: missing data and nonvoting, 6) typological analysis (cluster analysis and factor analysis), 7) explanatory models Economic voting, spatial model, collective voting), 8) regression analysis linear and logistic (selection of explanatory variables), 9) preparation for reporting the results: formal structure, presentation of the results and their explanation in the way oriented toward a reader. The topic can be discussed on more than one class and in other order. |

The workshop is aimed as a preparation to social data analysis on intermediary level. They are hold in data laboratory using SPSS with different social data. The workshop is devoted to analysis electoral data – social surveys, public opinion polls and official data. The workshop prepares to independent data analysis using advanced methods. This combines important analytical questions with corresponding analytical skills. The analyzed problems: 1) formation of public opinion during campaign (description of social situation using public opinion polls), 2) basic determinants of political participation and preferences (bivariate analysis), 3) analysis of official electoral data (exploratory analysis), 4) changes in opinion (panel data), 5) special analysis: missing data and nonvoting, 6) typological analysis (cluster analysis and factor analysis), 7) explanatory models Economic voting, spatial model, collective voting), 8) regression analysis linear and logistic (selection of explanatory variables), 9) preparation for reporting the results: formal structure, presentation of the results and their explanation in the way oriented toward a reader. |

Learning outcomes: |
Has in-depth knowledge of selected methods and techniques of social research, their limitations, specificity and areas of application Is aware of the importance of a reflective and critical approach to the results of social research, analyses and research procedures Knows how to plan and carry out complex qualitative and quantitative empirical research; is aware of the consequences of methodological choices Can use theoretical categories and research methods in the description and analysis of social and cultural changes in modern societies, as well as their consequences Can plan and carry out a social study using advanced quantitative and qualitative methods and techniques of social research Can use a selected computer program for data analysis, including its advanced functions Can prepare a presentation of a selected problem or study in Polish and in a foreign language Can gather, find, synthesize and critically assess information about social sciences Can argue a thesis using scientific evidence Takes responsibility for planned and performed tasks |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Participation in classes (up to 3 absences) and report. A student is prepared for a report with the special class and auxillary instructions. The reports and marks can be corrected.The criterion of final marks are: lack of statistical errors, following the insturctions, and manifestation of knowledge acquired during the class. For the good and best notes - an interesting idea for the final report. |
