Short description:

Jacques Rancière is one of the most frequently invoked French thinkers, who , as he says – for philosophers he is a historian, and for historians he is a philosopher. Rancière is a theoretician and critic of contemporary Western political systems. He gained recognition thanks to his book La Nuit des prolétaires (1981), in which he presented a key thesis for his perspective about the erroneous opposition destroying democracy dividing people into those who have the ability to create ideas and those who are deprived of the ability to think. His recognition of this opposition is developed in his subsequent works, and his concept of the people (le peuple) as the subject of history is a point of reference in contemporary debates on democracy and post-democracy.

Any progressive claims of change begin, according to the author, with an idea of a new division of roles and a presentation of what is common (le commun), which is why the political scene is always an aesthetic scene. Classes will be devoted to the discussion on extensive fragments of the author's texts. The reconstructed concepts of the author give the opportunity to interpret contemporary social, economic and political phenomena.
