The program covers selected topics of linguistics, discourse analysis and rhetoric.

The program covers selected topics of linguistics (presupposition, implicature, irony, metaphor, metonymy), text linguistics (cohesion, coherence, information structure), discourse analysis (registers, polyphony) and rhetoric (invention, arrangement, style, argument types recognition, eristic techniques recognition).

STUDENT WORKLOAD:

Writing an essay - 10 hours

K_W01 Student has an in-depth knowledge of the field and methodology in specific areas of linguistics, discourse analysis and social semiotics.

K_W07 Student knows advanced methods developed in linguistics, linguistic discourse analysis and social semiotics, which enable him/her to problematize, analyse and interpret phenomena in culture, interpersonal communication and social discourses.

K_U01 Using various sources, students can search for, select, analyse, evaluate and integrate data concerning language, communication and discursive aspects of social life, and to formulate critical judgments on this basis.

K_U05 Student can use the achievements of modern linguistics, discourse analysis and social semiotics for the purpose of critical assessment and interpretation of cultural artifacts and intellectual or ideological currents.

K_U07 Student has argumentation and persuasion skills that can make use of one’s own ideas and opinions of other social actors. S/he can formulate conclusions and synthetic summaries.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

• The pre-condition for the obtaining a passing grade is attendance. Two unjustified absences per semester are allowed.

• Passing grade on the basis of an essay that will check knowledge of the concepts introduced in the classroom, the ability to define them and apply to the analysis of the selected text (90 points). The ability to build a consistent and correct language written statement (10 points) will also be assessed.

Retake credit under the same conditions as a credit in the first term.
