Short description:

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the methodology of qualitative and quantitative content analysis. The course consists of three parts: the first (theoretical) part presents theoretical assumptions underlying the content analysis and the differentiation of content analysis types. In the second part of the course, the basic elements of the methodology of content analysis will be discussed, with an emphasis on the questions of when it can be used, how to select data for analysis, what counts as the unit of analysis. Additionally, we will look at different strategies for conducting content analysis. In the third part, the participants will go through the following steps of the analytical process using Atlas.ti 9 program: 1) preparation of the research plan; 2) specifying research questions; 3) preparation of the code key; 4) qualitative coding in Atlas.ti; 5) analysis of the encoded material; 6) presentation of the results.

Full description:

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the methodology of content analysis. The classes consist of a theoretical part - introducing the assumptions and methodology of content analysis, and a workshop - in which each participant will conduct their own analysis, independently working with the Atlas.ti program, taking into account the methodological assumptions learned in the first part of the course.

In the theoretical part, we will discuss the basic assumptions of the content analysis approach and look at its two basic types: qualitative and quantitative analysis. We will also learn how to combine qualitative and quantitative approaches in the research process. The main part of the course will be dedicated to discussing the methodology of computer-aided content analysis, i.e. selection of research topics, selection of data for analysis and the problem of representativeness, creating a code key and working with codes.

In the workshop part, participants will go through the following steps of the analytical process using the Atlas.ti program, implementing a selected research project: 1) preparing a research plan; 2) specifying research questions; 3) preparation of the code key; 4) qualitative coding in Atlas.ti; 5) analysis of the encoded material with the use of analytical tools available in the Atlas.ti program; 6) presentation of the results.
