  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Short description:

The course offers a general survey of the sociology of deviance and emphasizes various perspectives on deviance: ways of looking at deviance and deviant behavior, as well as approaches to controlling that behavior. Also, it attempts to show the relation between deviance theories and ways of thinking about the social order.

The course offers a general survey of the sociology of deviance and emphasizes various perspectives on deviance: ways of looking at deviance and deviant behavior, as well as approaches to controlling that behavior. Also, it attempts to show the relation between deviance theories and ways of thinking about the social order. Referring to the classical and contemporary sociological and criminological texts, we will discuss the most important ways of conceptualizing deviance and sociological explanatory concepts. The aim of the course is to show the how our thinking about deviant behavior is embedded in our thinking about the foundations of social order.

Learning outcomes:

The student:

Knows and understands basic sociological concepts in sociology of deviance and social control

Has awareness of aware of the relationships between social organization existing in the past and in the present and deviant behavior and social control

Has basic knowledge about the politics and policies of social pathology

Understands the specificity of social deviance analysis

Has basic knowledge of the norms and rules governing social structures and institutions

Can interpret past and present social events related to deviance using sociological concepts and theories

Can conduct a simple analysis of the consequences of social deviance identification processes

Can discuss measures presented as solutions to particular, deviance-related social problems
