Short description: |
Modernization has become one of the most important topics in the social sciences and humanities. Different approaches in conceptualization and modernization research will be discussed. The starting point will be reading the Memoirs of the Nervously Ill Daniel Paul Schreber. At the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this reading and its interpretations became iconic when it comes to issues related to modernization. Modernization is, on the one hand, great processes – the formation of the modern state in new institutions (police, school), development, industrialization and urbanization, and on the other hand, a constant dispute with these changes, which was expressed in culture (psychoanalysis and art) and in social upheavals (social movements and revolutions). |

Modernization has become one of the most important topics in the social sciences and humanities. Different approaches in conceptualization and modernization research will be discussed. The starting point will be reading the Memoirs of the Nervously Ill Daniel Paul Schreber. At the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this reading and its interpretations became iconic when it comes to issues related to modernization. Modernization is, on the one hand, great processes – the formation of the modern state in new institutions (police, school), development, industrialization and urbanization, and on the other hand, a constant dispute with these changes, which was expressed in culture (psychoanalysis and art) and in social upheavals (social movements and revolutions). Modernization is a time of formation of ideas and ideals and their migration between different cultures. During the classes, various versions of modernization will be discussed – French, German, Anglo-Saxon and peripheral. The last part of the classes will be devoted to the decline of modernization and the emergence of new social and cultural forms heralding the end of both modernization and the "great narrative" about modernity. |
