(in Polish) The seminar will be the first combined course implemented at the IF UW as part of the CEEPUS program. Classes will be taught by prof. Una Popović (University of Novi Sad), Goran Rujević (University of Novi Sad) and Tadeusz Ciecierski (IF UW). Its goal is to look at the sources (often common!) of the contemporary philosophy of language - both analytical and continental. A part of the course will be focused on the interrelations of contemporary logic, the phenomenology and ideas developed in Brentano school, especially with regard to the problem of meaning. The main issues addressed are: 1) the problem of language as such, that is, the new ways of philosophical analysis of language, 2) the relations between the theories of intentionality and theories of linguistic content, and 3) the question of meaning(fulness), as an especially important aspect of the philosophy of language in both of these traditions. Planned topics (tentative list): 1) Aristotle, Al-Farabi and Avicenna: precursors to contemporary philosophy of language 2) Frege and Husserl: the new approaches to the language and the problem of meaning 3) Husserl: semantic categories (connections with categorial grammar) and indexicality 4) Twardowski and Frege: object and content versus sense and reference 5) Meinong, objectives, kinds of intentional acts and their correlata 6) Frege on sense and indexicality 7) The analogy between language and games 8) Husserl and Heidegger: formal indication – methodological character of language 9) Heidegger and Carnap: the concept of Nothing 10) Brentano school and speech act theory (Reinach and Austin) 11) Phenomenology and the Ordinary Language Philosophy: the performative character of language 12) Meaning and scientific discourse |
