Short description:	The class aims at providing students with tools that allow them to analyze oral interactions, both in one- and cross-culture contexts.
Full description:	The class aims at providing students with tools that allow them to analyze oral interaction. On the basis of authentic examples of oral interaction the following topics will be discussed: 1. transcription conventions (turn-taking, pauses and hesitations, rhythm, intonation, voice, gestures, discourse markers); 2. the organization of an utterance, taking the floor; 3. overall structure of conversation: beginning a conversation, the corpus, closing a conversation; 4. the structure of conversation: adjacency pairs; topical cohesion; 5. politeness (the concept of 'face' and 'territory', positive and negative politeness); 6. formulaic speech, rituals; 7. forms of address; 8. emotions in speech (recognition, indicators, management); 9. intercultural approaches: breakdown of communication resulting from misunderstandings and cultural differences. During the class audio- and video materials will be used. STUDENT WORKLOAD: classes - 30 h. preparation for classes and further reading - 40 h. preparation for the final test - 5 h. Total - 75 h. (3 ECTS).

Learning outcomes:	Knowledge Students know the basic concepts and theories used in conversation analysis. Skills Students can use conversation analysis tools to examine on their own an oral interaction chosen. Attitudes Students are aware of the complex and multilevel character of oral interactions. They are also aware of the possibility of cross-cultural differences and misunderstandings at every level of oral interaction.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria:	The pre-condition for the obtaining a passing grade is attendance. Two unjustified absences per semester are allowed. • Passing grade based on a written test containing open questions and involving the analysis of oral interaction. The following aspects will be assessed: knowledge of the concepts and terms introduced in the classes (40 p.), the ability to correctly use them for analysis of oral interaction (40 p.), in-depth analysis (10 p.), consistency and linguistic correctness of the written expression (10 p.). GRADING SCALE: 100% – 91% bdb 90% – 81% db + 80% – 71% db 70% – 61% dst + 60% – 50% dst
