Short description:	Our analysis will be focused on therapeutic and religious discourses, as well as popular culture, including guidebooks, TV series and advertising content. The following topics will be discussed: indivisualism, privatization of social problems, re-definition of the social, and social inequalities. Symbolic violence is often identified with “soft” manifestations of violence. Some contemporary phenomena related to such forms of violence, like language and visual message, will be discussed.
Full description:	Our analysis will be focused on therapeutic and religious discourses, as well as popular culture, including guidebooks, TV series and advertising content. The following topics will be discussed: indivisualism, privatization of social problems, re-definition of the social, and social inequalities. Symbolic violence is often identified with “soft” manifestations of violence. Some contemporary phenomena related to such forms of violence, like language and visual message, will be discussed. The above-mentioned discourses make it possible for the individuals to rationally control their lives, as well as minimising uncertainty and chaos (P. Bourdieu, M. Foucault, E. Illouz, J.-C. Kaufmann, A. Mbembe, M. Seltzer). These circumstances foster new forms of symbolic violence which operates by identifying the individual’s autonomy and happiness as his or her own responsibility. The privatization of social problems, the blurred private versus public dichotomy, the economization of the common language, panpsychologism, traumatophilia and biopolitics are the main concepts that will help to reveal symbolic violence in late capitalism.

Learning outcomes:	(in Polish) K_W11 Ma rozszerzoną wiedzę o strukturach i instytucjach społecznych, w tym o aspektach komunikacyjnych i dyskursywnych ich funkcjonowania. K_W13 Ma rozszerzoną wiedzę o zależnościach między komunikacją a władzą, zarówno państwową, jak i sprawowaną przez media lub za pośrednictwem dyskursów eksperckich. K_W18 Ma pogłębioną wiedzę na temat norm i reguł społecznych obowiązujących w obszarze komunikacji publicznej, specjalistycznej i międzykulturowej. K_W20 Ma pogłębioną wiedzę na temat historycznych przemian struktur, instytucji oraz więzi społecznych, wypracowaną w obszarze badań nad komunikacją społeczną oraz socjologicznej analizy dyskursu.
