The course includes the following main areas: pre-Qin culture and literature (Confucian classics, Daoist literature, other philosophical works, historical-political literature, etc.) cultural shift and transition between the pre-Qin and the later imperial state system Qin and Han literature (old and new texts’ schools, compilations, chronicles) the history of Chinese poetry (from Shijing and Chuci to 20th century poetry ) cultural changes in the Nanbeichao period to Tang dynasty the history of official prose (historiography, commentaries, compilations, fugu movement, baguwen, etc.) cultural impact of growing bureaucracy and official examination system the growth of city middle class and the history of popular prose (from zhiguai xiaoshuo and Tang chuanqi to the novel and short story) East-West cultural clash in 19/20th c. China, and Republican literature literature in PRC after 1949 literature outside PRC after 1949 modern culture and literature (until the end of 20th c.)). |

Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Written exam at the end of the second semester. Exam includes content of lectures and set readings. Participation in lectures advised but not required. |
