Short description:

Basic course of the Amharic language with elements of ethnolinguistics.

Full description:

Study includes Ethiopian writing system - alphasyllabary, rudiments of grammar, useful in everyday life dialogues as well as basic Amharic words constituing key-notions to discovering Ethiopian culture and society.

Learning outcomes:

After finishing the course a student will be able to communicate in everyday situations: shopping, visiting a doctor, or traveling. He will know how to introduce himself and how to carry a basic conversation on general topics as well as read and write Amharic basic texts.

Knowledge:

- has a basic knowledge of the Amharic language, its structure, history and script,

- is aware of the complex nature of the Amharic language, its place and significance in the cultural and historical context of Ethiopia,

- is aware of the linguistic variety and its influence on the cultural and political situation of the world,

- has rudimentary knowledge of translation rules from the Amharic language into Polish.

Skills:

- can use the knowledge of socio-cultural issues of the Horn of Africa in typical professional situations,

- has a command of Amharic at the basic level,

- can analyze and interpret basic source texts in Amharic,

- can fluently use the script of the Amharic language following the rules of standard orthography

- can properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment of Ethiopia,

Social competences:

- understands the need lifelong learning,

- can cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations,

- can establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures,

- has awareness of the cultural distinctness and its religious, philosophical, traditional and historical roots and its significance for understanding modern world,

1. Sylabariusz etiopski, zasady interpunkcji i ortografii języka amharskiego/ Ethiopian script, punctuation and basic ortography rules.

2. Pozdrowienia w różnych sytuacjach: prywatnych i oficjalnych, a także w zależności od różnych pór dnia, roku, świąt, etc./ Greetings in a variety of situations.

3. Dom i rodzina – terminy pokrewieństwa –– stosunki i zależności rodzinne oraz te w społeczeństwie etiopskim/ Home and family – kinship terms – family and social relations.

4. Ubiory i kolory – etiopski sposób ubierania się w zależności od statusu społecznego oraz okazji. Kolory Etiopii – różnorodność etniczna/ Dresses and colours.

5. Etiopski kalendarz – dni, miesiące, lata/ Ethiopian calendar – days, months and years.
