Japanese Literature and Culture

obligatory courses

Lecture course covers history of literature, beginning with the importation of Chinese writing in the 6-7th century up to 20th century (to 2000 year), divided into two parts:

1) the Ancient - Mediaeval Periods. The historical outline of the literature begins with myths and traditions preserved in the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters, 712) and other oldest books in Japan, and most important ancient lyrics The Man’yōshū (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves, about 789), Imperial Anthologies of Japanese Poetry Waka, such as Kokinshū (Ancient and Modern Poetry, 905), a linked poems renga, court narrative and war narrative, diaries, and essays of medieval period, and the noh plays perfected by Kan’ami and his son Zeami.

2) Second part of lecture course is devoted to Modern (1600-1868) and Contemporary Period (up. to 2000 year).

Po ukończeniu przedmiotu student ma:

Skills

-can indicate sources of cultural differences between the countries of the Orient [K-U02]

- can read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Japan and appropriately place them in their cultural context [K-U06]

- can compare and perceive interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Japan and the issues within the scope of tradition and modern times [K-U07]

- can analyze most important phenomena/trends in art (painting, sculpture, architecture, other fields) of Japan [K-U08]

- can use the knowledge of socio-cultural issues of Japan in typical professional situations [K-U10]

- can translate literary texts and writings from Japanese language into Polish [K-U14]

- can interpret key terms from culture of Japan through linguistic/philological analysis [K-U15]

- can properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment of Japan [K-U17]

- can use electronic and internet tools both in Polish and in Japanese [K-U24]

Social Competences
