Short description: |
The lecture will present a general panorama of the literatures of Sub-Saharan Africa, both written and oral. The main theme of the lecture will be literature created by Africans in European languages - English, French and Portuguese. However, also selected issues of the history of literatures in indigenous languages will be mentioned, especially in relation to the languages taught at the Department Of African Languages Cultures i. e. Swahili, Hausa and Amharic. |

Learning outcomes: |
KNOWLEDGE has basic knowledge in the range of theory of humanities (literary studies or linguistics or history) necessary to understand chosen cultural aspects has detailed and organized knowledge of literature and writings of chosen regions in tAfrica; can name and characterize most important phenomena/trends/literary texts/writings of chosen regions in Africa can name and characterize basic cultural phenomena of a chosen region in Africa has rudimentary knowledge of translation rules from a chosen African language into Polish knows and understands basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of chosen theories and schools of research within the scope of cultural and literary studies, linguistics, philosophy and religion studies and history knows and understands basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of local traditions in chosen regions in the Orient or Africa SKILLS can indicate sources of cultural differences between the countries of the Orient or Africa can read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Africa and appropriately place them in their cultural context can compare and perceive interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of a chosen region in Africa and the issues within the scope of tradition and modern times can analyze most important phenomena/trends in art (painting, sculpture, architecture, other fields) of a chosen region in the Orient or Africa can indicate most important intellectual problems, dilemmas, aesthetic preferences taking shape inside the culture of a chosen region in the Orient or Africa can translate literary texts and writings from a chosen Oriental or African language into Polish can interpret key terms from a chosen culture of the Orient or Africa through linguistic/philological analysis can properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment of a chosen region in the Orient or Africa has a skill in presenting detailed aspects within the scope of cultural issues of a chosen region in the Orient or Africa in Polish and in a chosen Oriental or African language taking into consideration the intellectual tradition of chosen regions in the Orient or Africa SOCIAL COMPETENCES understands the need to learn all one’s life can set appropriate goals and ways to achieve them in the context of academic, professional and social activity has awareness of the cultural distinctness and its religious, philosophical, traditional and historical roots and its significance for understanding modern world sees the need of dialogue between cultures is aware of significance the culture of the countries in the Orient or Africa has for the culture of the world acts in aid of sharing and promoting cultural and linguistic heritage of a chosen region in the Orient or Africa perceives the positive socio-cultural values of a chosen region in the Orient or Africa and possibility to use them in own personal development and effective intercultural communication |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The students are required to read three pieces of literature selected in communication with the teacher. The oral exam is based on the student's presentation of the assigned reading (50%) and the knowledge of the issues covered by the lecture. |
