Short description:

Continuation of Hausa course enriched with elements of the culture of Nigeria.

Full description:

The main aim of the course is a continuation of learning Hausa as a second African language with reference to the cultural context. Focus will be on mastering correct pronunciation, linguistic structures and vocabulary that will enable students to use spoken and written Hausa in various situations. The teaching of proverbs will be included in the curriculum. They will be material for discussions on cultural topics, as well as for exercises aimed at improving the skills of translating Hausa into Polish.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course student

- is aware of the nature of Hausa language, its place and significance in the cultural and historical context of a given region of Africa

- has a basic knowledge of translation rules from Hausa language into Polish

- can read, analyze and simple interpret texts

, comprehends simple oral utterances,

- has a basic command of Hausa (including vocabulary, collocations, phrases, idioms, useful sentences and formulas) at A2 level

- can cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations

- can establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures

- has awareness of the cultural distinctness and its religious, philosophical, traditional and historical roots and its significance for understanding modern world

-is aware of significance the culture of Africa have for the culture of the world

Short description:

Continuation of Hausa course enriched with elements of the culture of Nigeria. The aim of the course is acquiring communication skills in the understanding of spoken and written text, translation, speaking and creating written statements. Students will also learn basic information about the culture of Nigeria. Focus will be on mastering correct pronunciation, linguistic structures and vocabulary that will enable students to use spoken and written Hausa in various situations. New phrases will be discussed with reference to their usage context. Selected grammar issues will be presented in detail. Regular attendance, preparation for classes and timely delivery of homework are required to obtain a pass mark. At the end of the semester, students will solve a test consisting of open-ended and single-choice questions, checking the mastery of the material from the classes, covering issues in the field of vocabulary, phraseology, grammar and culture.

Full description:

The form of the classes is a practical learning course. The following teaching methods will be used: elements of lecture, discussion, practical language learning, work with text. Language learning materials in the form of textbooks, dictionaries, texts as well as audio and video recordings will be used. The main aim of the course is a continuation of learning Hausa as a second African language with reference to the cultural context. Focus will be on mastering correct pronunciation, linguistic structures and vocabulary that will enable students to use spoken and written Hausa in various situations. The teaching of proverbs will be included in the curriculum. They will be material for discussions on cultural topics, as well as for exercises aimed at improving the skills of translating Hausa into Polish. Additionally, the modified Arabic script for writing Hausa will be presented. Students will learn phrases and vocabulary that are applicable in various situations of everyday life (i.a. bargaining, correspondence, delivering a paper) and practice the use of grammatical structures of the language (i.a. the verb system, conditional modes, modifying the order of sentences). Students will use the acquired knowledge during practical exercises in the oral form (conversation, answering) and in writing (written texts on a given topic). Students' insights on the covered topics and methods of effective language learning will be discussed. Regular attendance, preparation for classes and timely delivery of homework are required to obtain a pass mark. At the end of the semester, students will solve a test consisting of open-ended and single-choice questions, checking the mastery of the material from the classes, covering issues in the field of vocabulary, phraseology, grammar and culture. Detailed issues will be given during the classes.
