  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The course aims at presenting a choice of important political and social issues of contemporary Africa. An important element is drawing attention to the interpenetration of traditional content, resulting from globalization and modernization trends. The topics of the classes include contemporary political issues and the ethnic and demographic situation in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa.

Full description:

The goal of the course is to familiarize participants with a choice of important political and social issues of contemporary Africa. The topics of the classes include contemporary social, political and security issues in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Within the course, there will be presented issues related to the protection of human rights in Africa, various aspects of conflicts in the postcolonial era, as well as contemporary security problems, including the growing phenomenon of Jihadism. Moreover, basic information on international relations in Africa will be discussed. The course offered in the spring semester is a continuation of classes taught in the winter semester.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands

* to an in-depth degree selected problems and foundations of the transformation processes in contemporary Africa in a comparative perspective including terminology in the field of African studies

* to an in-depth degree selected problems of cultures and societies in a selected region of Africa (in the field of ideology, culture and religion)

Skills: the graduate is able to

* to an in-depth degree selected problems of cultures and societies in a selected region of Africa (in the field of ideology, culture and religion)

* analyze and evaluate the importance of cultural influence on the activities of institutions, the emergence of armed conflicts, the existence of customs, rituals and symbols

* apply detailed knowledge about the state of research in the field of selected issues relating to sub-Saharan Africa to seek solutions to specific research problems

* apply methods of analysis, interpretation and evaluation of phenomena and products of sub-Saharan African cultures

Social competencies: the graduate is ready to

* critically evaluate the content resulting from cultural and linguistic diversity and its influence on the shaping of social and political attitudes and economic processes

* initiate activities for the public interest and to think and act in an entrepreneurial way using knowledge in the field of cultural diversity

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

- Attendance control - a student can be absent maximum twice during the semester. In the case of absence due to illness, the medical certificate excusing this absence should be submitted within seven days of the last day of the leave specified in the certificate.

- Active participation in classes

- Oral presentation

- Final test
