  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

A student needs to know formal rules of composing dissertations (collecting and presenting bibliography, composing notes etc.) as well as have general knowledge of the subject of his/her dissertation.)

Short description:

Diploma Seminar for students who continue their studies after obtaining BA in African Studies and for new students.

Full description:

The aim of the classes is to improve the skills necessary for effective fulfilment of research related to the issue of master thesis. They are strictly individualised, taking into consideration the issues of scientific work which are important from the perspective of the given research, e.g. writing academic skills and scientific communication.

During the seminar a student is expected to choose a subject of his/her M.A. thesis and then to do research aimed at collecting material and writing the thesis. The chosen subject will determine the necessary research.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course the student:

has detailed knowledge pertaining to the state of research on chosen issues related to African countries as well as in-depth knowledge of research centres in Poland and all over the world;

knows and understands methods of advanced analysis and interpretation of various products of culture in Africa, which are relevant for selected traditions, theories and research schools within the scope of studies on literature, language, culture and religion;

knows and understands the local academic tradition (methods of analysis, interpretation and evaluation) in the context of Africa;

knows and understands the rules of copyright and intellectual property management;

can search for, analyze, evaluate and use information from different sources and can form critical judgement on its basis;

can acquire knowledge independently and enhance research skills as well as develop abilities to build a professional career;

can carry out a critical analysis and interpretation of different products of culture of Mongolia and Tibet appropriate to a selected tradition, theory and research schools within the scope of studies on literature, language, culture and religion employing unique attitude of Oriental studies;

can choose and formulate a subject of an MA thesis, select and find sources in an African language, refer to certain theories and other sources;

acquires ability to argument on substantive basis using other authors’ views ;

can set appropriate goals and ways to achieve them in the context of academic, professional and social activity;

is open to new ideas and trends as well as cultural diversity;

understands and appreciates the value of tradition and cultural heritage of one’s own country and of Africa

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The evaluation will be done considering 1. Presence 2. Completing successive tasks aimed at finalizing the M.A. thesis. Additionally, student needs to present one seminar paper, both orally and in writing.

Attendance control - a student can be absent max. twice during the semester; in the case of absence due to illness, the medical certificate excusing this absence should be submitted within seven working days of the last day of the leave specified in the certificate.
