  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;

Short description:

This course is an introduction to writing in the Arabic script. Moreover, the students learn the rules of the Arabic orthography, the history of the Arabic script and various styles of the Arabic calligraphy (kūfi, nasḫī, ruqʿa, ṯuluṯ).

Full description:

This course is an introduction to writing in the Arabic script and focuses on mastering the correct shapes and connections between the letters. Moreover, the students learn the most important rules of the Arabic orthography, as well as origins and development of the Arabic script and various styles of the Arabic calligraphy (kūfi, nasḫī, ruqʿa, ṯuluṯ).

Learning outcomes:

Alumnus/alumna:

K_W12: has extensive knowledge of the Arabic language (its/their structure, history, script)

K_W13: is aware of the complex nature of Arabic, its place and significance in the cultural and historical context of Arab countries

K_W14: is aware of the linguistic variety and its influence on the cultural and political situation of the world

K_W15: has a rudimentary knowledge of translation rules from Arabic into Polish

K_U06: is able to read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) and appropriately place them in their cultural context

K_U12: has a good command of Arabic at the B2 level

K_U13: is able to analyze and interpret source texts in Arabic

K_U14: can translate literary texts and writings from Arabic into Polish

K_U15: is able to interpret key terms from a culture of Arab countries through linguistic/philological analysis

K_U16: is able to fluently use the Arabic script and the necessary tools to learn and analyze it (traditional and electronic dictionaries, lexicons, linguistic corpora, databases, etc.)

K_U17: is able to properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment of Arab countries

K_U24: is able to use electronic and internet tools both in Polish and Arabic

K_K01: understands the need to learn all one’s life

K_K02: is prepared to cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations

K_K03: is prepared to establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures

K_K05: is prepared to make others aware of the cultural distinctness and its religious, philosophical, traditional and historical roots and its significance for understanding the modern world

K_K08: acts in aid of sharing and promoting the cultural and linguistic heritage of Arab countries

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Attendance control. Max. two absences (4 hours) are allowed in a semester. In case of absence due to illness, a medical certificate should be submitted within seven working days from the last day of the leave specified in the certificate.
