Command of Hebrew at the elementary level (A2).

Classroom

Hebrew language course on intermediate level (B1) during the first semester and upper intermediate level (B2) during the second semester. The main aim of the module is to develop the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in contemporary Hebrew and also reading and analyzing fragments of the Hebrew Bible.

During the course students master the knowledge of Hebrew language on upper intermediate level. The main objective is to improve communication skills in Hebrew. The learners are able to speak fluently and to understand their interlocutors. They become familiar with different registers of language- from colloquial to formal. They improve their writing skills by writing letters and summaries. They are able to understand recorded texts, dialogues, monologues, lectures and radio news.

Reading ability is developed by coping with more complex texts: the original or adapted modern literary passages, newspaper articles and easier fragments of the Hebrew Bible and other classical texts.

Knowledge:

- has extensive knowledge of Hebrew at B2 level

- is aware of the complex nature of Hebrew, its place and significance in the cultural and historical context of Jews and Israel

Skills:

- has a good command of Hebrew at B2 level

- can analyze and interpret source texts in Hebrew

- can translate literary texts and writings from Hebrew into Polish

- can fluently use the script of Hebrew and the necessary tools to learn and analyze it (traditional and electronic dictionaries, lexicons, linguistic corpora, data bases, etc.)

- can properly function in the linguistic and cultural environment in Israel

- has a skill at formulating own opinions and conclusions in writing and in speech both in Polish and in Hebrew

- can use electronic and internet tools both in Polish and in Hebrew

Social competences:

- understands the need to learn all one’s life

- can cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations

- can establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures

The final grade is the average of all partial grades. The following grading scale is as following:

99-100% 5! (excellent)

93-98% 5 (very good)

87-92% 4.5 (good plus)

77-86% 4 (good)

71-76% 3.5 (sufficient plus)

60-70% satisfactory

0-59% insufficient

After each completed topic, students write a test. Additionally, each student prepares at least 4 written assignments per semester. The student's presence during classes is also assessed. A student who has more than 40% of absences is not entitled to a credit, also in the re-sit session. A student who regularly participated in the classes and obtained an average grade of 2, may only proceed to pass the exam in the re-sit session.

To pass the course, the student must be present at at least 60% of the classes and obtain the arithmetic average of at least 3 of all partial grades.

The final grade for the Hebrew Language and Culture course is a weighted average (depending on the number of hours) of the grades given by individual teachers.
