Short description:

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of the classical Japanese language (bungo). It also develops direct reading skills of classical Japanese texts. The primary focus of the course will be on the mastery of basic grammar, orthography, vocabulary, and elements of the style of classical Japanese. In addition to working on language skills, special attention will be given to acquiring familiarity with bungo through the use of annotated texts.

Full description:

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of the classical Japanese language (bungo). It also develops direct reading skills of classical Japanese texts. The primary focus of the course in the first semester will be on the mastery of basic grammar, orthography, vocabulary, and elements of the style of classical Japanese. In addition to working on language skills, special attention will be given to acquiring familiarity with bungo through the use of annotated texts.

The course will deal with the following topics: differences between modern and classical Japanese, grammatical structures (particles, verbs, honorifics), vocabulary, grammar analysis as well as contextual reading.

Texts for the course will be a selection from literary and historical works of the Heian (8th-12th century), Kamakura (12th-14th century), Muromachi (14th-16th century), and Edo (16th -19th century) periods.
