• A seminar offers students the opportunity to undertake the interesting topic in linguistics and research it. All the support to finalize the results of his/her work in writing is provided.

This course is designed to help students to:

• select a topic to research in Chinese linguistics,

• identify the sources and search for the materials referring to the subject,

• acquire data (if the topic requires it) to be analyzed,

• lay out a plan of the paper and a detailed outline to display the data obtaining criteria, analysis methods, range of the research and all the related items of the paper,

• present their research, step by step, the arguments and the sections of the paper.

A special attention is paid to research methods, selected materials, data sources and analysis, its interpretation and writing technique.

The subject offers knowledge, skills and social competences as the learning outcomes to a student, who:

has basic knowledge of the place and importance of Oriental studies in the humanities and their specificity in relation to the subject and methodology (K_W01+++)

demonstrates basic grasp of contemporary cultural life of China, Taiwan and region of the Chinese civilization (K_W16+++)

knows the state of research in chosen aspects pertaining to China (K_W17+++)

knows and understands basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of chosen theories and schools of research within the scope of cultural and linguistics (K_W18+++)

knows and understands basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of local traditions in China (K_W19++)

knows and understands the basic terms and rules of copyright and protection of intellectual property (K_W20+)

can search for, analyze, evaluate and use information from different sources (K_U01+++)

can use the knowledge of history of China to analyze and interpret events taking place in the modern world (K_U04+)

can appropriately place China and region of the Chinese civilization in the context of circumstances pertinent to natural, geopolitical and economic environment (K_U05+)

can read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of China and appropriately place them in their cultural context (K_U06++)

can compare and perceive interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of region of China and the Chinese civilization and the issues within the scope of tradition and modern times (K_U07++)

has a good command of a foreign language at least at the B2 level (K_U11++)

can analyze and interpret source texts in the Chinese language (K_U13++)

can interpret key terms from a chosen culture of China through linguistic/philological analysis (K_U15++)

can fluently use the script of the Chinese language and the necessary tools to learn and analyze it (traditional and electronic dictionaries, lexicons, linguistic corpora, data bases, etc.) (K_U16++)

has the necessary skills to prepare seminar papers: can select and find sources and analyses in the Chinese language, knows the methodology of writing seminar papers (K_U18++)

can use basic knowledge in the scope of methodology of cultural research in a seminar paper (K_U19+++)

can choose and formulate a subject of a BA thesis, select and find sources in a Chinese language, make references to basic theoretical approaches (K_U20+++)

has a skill in presenting detailed aspects within the scope of cultural issues of China in Polish and in a chosen Oriental or African language taking into consideration the intellectual tradition of China (K_U21+++)

has a skill at formulating own opinions and conclusions in writing and in speech both in Polish and in Chinese (K_U22+++)

has the ability of substantive argumentation with the use of other authors’ views (K_U23+++)

can use electronic and internet tools both in Polish and in Chinese (K_U24++)

can communicate with specialists in the fields of academic research and in academic disciplines pertinent to the Oriental studies using contemporary IT technology (K_U25+++)

can acquire knowledge independently and develop research skills following the research supervisor’s instructions (K_U26+++)

understands the need to learn all one’s life (K_K01+++)

can cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations (K_K02++)

Attendance (maximum 2 absences during a semester), activity in the class and the final paper are essential; Continuous assessment of the regular search query and work on the paper. Written assignment in a form of a paper should be completed by the end of summer term (complete draft of paper much earlier). It should provide the research result and expose all the process of obtaining data, theory, the sources and the analysis. In the course of preparing the paper the presentation of the topic should draw the attention of others and prove the topic understandable and interesting.
