Short description: |
The course offers an overview of the main ethical theories and attitudes towards animals. Students will learn to distinguish different ethical trends and argumentation related, among other things, to animal rights, the value of animal lives, the empowerment, wellbeing and protection of animals. They will also learn about different critiques of different ethical theories and try to offer their own approach to them. They will also learn how to lead a discussion in which they are able to defend their attitude towards animals with the help of arguments from different ethical theories and utilizing their knowledge from other areas. |

Learning outcomes: |
Knowledge: - Basic knowledge of environmental philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science and ethics. - Understanding the role of law, customs and morality as regulators of human-animal relations. - Knowledge about ethical and cultural attitudes towards animals in the history of civilization, especially changes occurring in contemporary times. - Understanding the natural, economic, legal, social and political determinants of human-animal relations. - Awareness of the consequences of decisions, especially those affecting the natural environment and animal wellbeing. - Familiarity with resources in the arts, literature, language and philosophy related to reflection about animals and animality. Skills - Diagnosing the main ideological disputes over the status of animals and their use by humans in the course of history - Communicating in a modern foreign language and making use of foreign-language source materials - Knowing how to continually update and expand one’s knowledge and improve one’s skills. Social skills: - Being prepared for fact-based argumentation in academic debates and ideological disputes while respecting views different from one’s own - Being prepared for acting in accordance with the code of scientific work ethics and decency while respecting one’s own and others’ health as well as intellectual property rights - Being prepared for using deductive thinking skills in analysing natural phenomena and cultural processes |
