The aim of the course is to acquaint the participants with basic translation techniques. |
Full description: |
The aim of the course is to provide the participants with the skills required for translating philosophical texts from French into Polish. During each meeting we are going to discuss a translation (prepared beforehand) of a small fragment of a chosen text. This shall enable students to improve their translation skills, i.e. to learn to identify philosophical concepts used by an author and find their Polish equivalents, as well as to avoid basic mistakes (like calques), to stay (in suitable proportions) true to both the spirit and the letter of the translated text, and – last but not least – to write philosophical texts (in Polish) that respect the rules of correctness and the requirements of style. |

Learning outcomes: |
Acquired knowledge: - students will be familiar with selected English philosophical terminology - students will be aware of the complex nature of language and of the historical transformations of meanings Acquired skills: - students will be able to translate by themselves, from French into Polish, philosophical texts of an average level of difficulty - students will be able to search and select information from written and electronic sources, using search instruments Acquired social competence: - students will be ready to identify their knowledge and skills - students will be ready to organize their work in an effective manner and to assess critically its level of advancement |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Grading will be based on written translation papers. The object of evaluation will be the adequacy of translation, its terminological coherence and correctness in terms of Polish language and text edition. |
