Classroom

The seminar will be devoted to philosophical concepts of rebellion, revolution, and utopia. We will be discussing axiological assumptions and ethical implications of selected concepts od social change, having roots in broadly understood critical tradition. We will examine responses to the question how to leave capitalism: can one reform it or should it be overthrown in a revolutionary manner, and what role utopian thinking can play here.

We will study works of theoreticians of the XX and XXI century, with the particular focus on the concepts concerning global peripheries and semi-peripheries, feminist theories and ecological alternatives (H. Arendt, W. Benjamin, D. Bensaïd, E. Bloch, J. Butler, A. Davis, R. Dunayevskaya, E. Dussel, S. Federici, M. Foucault, M. Fisher, C. Gilligan, A. Graff, F. Gros, G. Gutiérrez, D. Haraway, C.L.R. James, N. Klein, E. Korolczuk, M. Löwy, A. Salleh, I. Wallerstein, S. Žižek).

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

After completion of the seminar, the student

– has systematic knowledge on historical and contemporary concepts of rebellion, revolution and utopia,

– recognizes and characterizes axiological assumptions and ethical implications of selected concepts of rebellion, revolution and utopia,

– identifies and describes key controversies between selected positions.

Skills:

After completion of the seminar, the student

– can critically analyse philosophical, scientific and journalist texts and statements on the seminar subjects,

– can formulate, argue properly and present their own position on the seminar subjects and can respond to the criticisms,

– can prepare a written analysis on aspects of the seminar theme.

Social competences:

After completion of the seminar, the student

– presents critical approach to concepts of rebellion, revolution and utopia in philosophical and political debates,

– can cooperate in a team,

– can discuss issues with respect to the beliefs and attitudes of others,

– is able to participate in debate on ethical issues arising in contemporary capitalism.

- activity during classes (including presence, knowledge of given readings, participation in discussions) – 50%,

- preparation of a seminar paper – 50%.
