The aim of the course is to offer an introduction to main concepts, methods and perspective of Western philosophical aesthetics presented as one of major fields of philosophy from ancient Greece to the 21st century. |

The aim of the course is to offer an introduction to main concepts, methods and perspective of Western philosophical aesthetics presented as one of major fields of philosophy from ancient Greece to the 21st century. During the course such questions will be raised: - what is an aesthetic experience (aesthetic appreciation)? - what are the main aesthetic categories? - what is the „modern system of the arts”? - is art an institution? - what is an artistic canon? - what is aesthetic taste? - is it possible to define art? - is art a language? - what is the difference between illusion and fiction? - what are the relations between aesthetics and politics? |

Acquired knowledge: - knowledge of research methods and argumentative strategies used in philosophical aesthetics - knowledge of the basic philosophical Polish terminology typical of philosophical aesthetics Acquired skills: - ability to interpret philosophical texts, comment on them and confront different theses - ability to analyze philosophical argumentation and identify logical relations between the theses Acquired social skills: - identifying one’s knowledge and skills - identifying lacunae in one’s knowledge and skills and searching for possibilities to eliminate them |
