Short description: |
The lecture is to enable the student to acquire knowledge and skills relating to issues concerning the EU’s relations with countries in the Middle East. The students should acquire the ability to use specialist language associated with these processes in the area specified. The programme includes: basic information about the societies of selected Middle Eastern countries and the development relationships with Europe in the 20th century. The problem of two different cultures co-existing. |

The lecture is to enable the student to acquire knowledge and competences in the area of relations between the European and Muslim countries; the history of the presence of Muslims in Europe in the earlier centuries, in the 20th and the 1st decade of the 21st century. The legal and social situation of the Muslim population: initially in Germany, then in the Benelux states and Scandinavia (e.g. Sweden). The Muslim migration to the EU countries in the 1st decade of the 21st century will be analysed, the influence of Muslim fundamentalism on the political situation, and the support of Muslim countries to promoting fundamentalist ideology in Europe. The causes for the conflicts between newcomers and locals arising and intensifying in different countries will be analysed. The approach by the state authorities to implementation of the international agreements concluded in individual periods. The students are expected to become acquainted with the Muslim religion – Islam and the role of religion in the lives of the European Muslims. With the advent of the 21st century the situation in the Middle East has changed, the political and social conflicts deepened (Arab Spring), which radically changed the attitude of the European countries towards Muslims. The Islamic terrorism, the EU policy towards Muslim immigrants, the participation of the EU countries in the fight against terrorist organisations will also be discussed. The lecture aims to help create the ability to think analytically about the political and cultural processes as well as enhance the skills of discussion and oral presentations. The course is also intended to help students to understand the functioning of the Middle East region in relations with the EU. Total extent of a student’s work on the subject: 90 hours. for regular studies 30 hours. preparation for class 10 hours. preparation of a group presentation 20 hours. preparation for test 30 hours. |

Learning outcomes: |
After the course the student: Has deeper knowledge of political and civilisational conditions of social life in the Middle Eastern region. Can analyse, identify and explain the ongoing changes in relations with the EU Has specialised knowledge of religious and cultural conditions in the Middle Eastern region and Europe Can independently study and explain the role of social and political structures in the modern state and world. Can critically evaluate human activity and achievements. Has extended skills of presenting own ideas, justifying them and confronting them with the opinions of other students, various authors in the context of varied theoretical streams. Can analyse and evaluate independently and critically the content of media communications. Has extended skills of preparing oral presentations in Polish on detailed subjects, using basic theoretical background and varied sources. Can plan within a group, adopting various roles in it. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The conditions for obtaining credits are activity during class (20%), a presentation (20%), an examination (60%). The latter is intended to verify the knowledge, skills and competencies gained, and will consist of RO, KO problem-oriented questions and sources. Some questions will require analytic and synthetic, as well as evaluation skills and the use of the new knowledge. |
