Main goal of course is to present the Eastern policy of the European Union: its origin, determinants and achievements, as well as specific features of this policy, main challenges, differentiation of partners and forms of cooperation. |

Relations of the European Union with Eastern Europe are of strategic importance for whole continent, due to fact that they concern cooperation both with Russia and other Eastern countries situated in Russian sphere of influence. Main actors of this policy are very different politically and economically. Eastern policy is a multilevel one, and in analyzing it one must take under considerations various cross-reacting elements. They include: - Historical, political and economical determinants of the EU's Eastern policy - Scope of Eastern policy; notion of "Eastern dimension" of the EU - Strategic partnership with Russia - Stages of Eastern policy (EU's enlargement in 2004-2007, European Neighbourhood Policy 2004, Eastern Partnership 2009) - Eastern Partnership: different partners - Assets and costs of the EU's Eastern policy. Student’s workload: classes in the hall - 15 h preparation for classes (including writing the essay) - 15 h preparing to pass - 30 h total - 60 h |

Having completed the course, students are expected: in the field of KNOWLEDGE to know: • origins of the EU's Eastern policy • basic elements of the notion of Eastern dimension of the EU • main stages of Eastern policy (since Eastward enlargement till Eastern Partnership • general knowledge on cooperation and rivalry in Eastern Europe • main factors and mechanisms determinating future shape of the EU's Eastern policy in the field of SKILLS to be able to: • explain origins of the contemporary integration processes in Eastern Europe • describe the main instruments and mechanisms of cooperation within the framework of Eastern policy • identify the differences between partners of Eastern Partnership • analyze publications and media information on the EU's Eastern policy in the field of SOCIAL COMPETENCIES to manage to: • formulate own opinions on functioning and main directions of the EU's Eastern policy • make a critical assessments of different information on undergoings in Europe • to show independence of thought in constant searching of knowledge and information on relations: European Union - Russia and European Union - countries of the Eastern Partnership |
