Students should be prepared field of international relations, general geography, geography of Europe, general history, history of Europe and political systems of the European countries.

Short description:

The aim of the course is a comprehensive overview of the foreign policy's theory and foreign policies of selected European Union member states.

Full description:

The course is focus on the foreign policies of selected EU Member States. Students will be familiarized with the theory of the foreign policy and its models. Lectures will be provided by several experts on area of international relations. Lecturers will characterize the foreign policies of France, Great Britain and Germany (the most important European powers); neutral and non-alignment countries; Mediterranean states and Central and Eastern countries as well.

Content of lectures:

Theory of a foreign policy,

The foreign policy of the European powers (Germany, France and Great Britain),

The Foreign policy of the Mediterranean states (Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Malta)

The Foreign policy of the neutral and non-alignment countries (Sweden, Finland, Austria, Ireland and Cyprus)

The foreign policy of the Central and Eastern countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary)

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

Within the sphere of knowledge:

• Have an in-depth understanding of the theory of a foreign policy and its models

• Know about the factors which influence the foreign policies of the European States

• Recognise the most important targets and priorities of the foreign policies of the European States

• Understand the foreign policies of certain selected countries and their influences on the shape of the European Union

Within the sphere of skills:

• Explain the genesis of contemporary relations between certain selected European countries

• Explain the dependency between the potential of a country and its foreign policy

• Define the elements which influence the role and position of a country in the international arena

• Recognise the political, economic and social potential of all European Union members

Within the sphere of social competence:

• Formulate their own opinions on the activity and direction of the development of the countries of the European Union

• Criticize political events within Europe

• Be open-minded towards ongoing research and the gathering of information on the relations between EU member states
