  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Prerequisites (description):

Students should be prepared field of international relations, general geography, geography of Europe, general history, history of Europe and political systems of the European countries.

Short description:

The course aims to present and discuss the theoretical domention of national minorities, to characterise the protecion system of national minorities, to describe the largest national minorities existing within the European Union and to show their problems.

Full description:

The aim of this course is to present the most important problems deriving from ethnic minorities currently existing in Europe.

Content of lecture

National minorities – theoretical dimension (definitions, systems of protection of national minorities);

European states and national minorities;

Hungarian problems in Europe – Hungarian minorities in Slovakia, Romania and Serbia;

Russian minorities in Baltic states – Russians in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania;

National minorities in Ukraine (Russians, Tatars, Poles)

National minorities in Poland and Polish minorities in Lithuania and Belarus;

Separatist movements in France – (Corsica, Bretagne)

National minorities in Germany

Albanian problem in Macedonia

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

Within the sphere of knowledge:

• Have an in-depth understanding of the theory of national minorities;

• Know about the international systems of national minorities protections;

• Understand the processes of integration and their influences on the pacification of a conflict situation relating to national minorities;

Within the sphere of skills:

• Explain the reasons of international problems relating to national minorities;

• Define the methods of resolving problems of national minorities;

Within the sphere of social competence:

• Formulate their own opinions on situation of national minorities;

• Criticize political events relating to national minorities within Europe.
