Short description:	The aim of the seminar is to present the pivotal moments in the history of Europe through characteristic feature films and documentaries, so as to encourage reflection not only on the specificity of the history and civilization of the continent, but also on the role of film as a source of knowledge of the past and present.
Full description:	The subject matter of the seminar covers fundamental phenomena and pivotal moments in the history of Europe, which have had considerable influence on the formation of the present European civilization. What has been taken into consideration is not only the political, but also the economic, social and cultural history of the continent (with special attention devoted to issues of science and technology). Feature films and documentaries created in different countries in the last century serve as a starting point for the discussion. The objective of the course is to encourage participants to formulate their own opinion on the very essence of Europeanism, features that constitute the European civilization and our way of perceiving the world, as well as to develop skills of film analysis. The latter is especially important in the era of "pictorial civilization", when reception is limited to following the plot thoughtlessly and enjoying the aesthetic aspect of the film. As Jerzy Płażewski puts it, "film illiteracy is far more common than illiteracy tout court, though more difficult to notice. It does not manifest itself in abandoning consumption but on the contrary, in excessive and uncritical consumption".
