ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

Students should be prepared at the grammar school level in the field of general history, history of Europe and contemporary society.

Short description:

The purpose of the seminar is to familiarize students with the genesis, course, results and perspectives of integration processes occurring in the past and now on the European continent.

Full description:

As part of the seminar, first introductory issues are presented and analyzed briefly, concerning the genesis of the idea of European unity and various integration projects undertaken on our continent over the centuries. The main part of the course is a more detailed and in-depth analysis of integration phenomena in the period after World War II, including the study of the main institutions, models, goals, stages and especially the individual stages of development and functioning of the European Communities/European Union.

The above issues are presented within the following thematic groups:

1. The origin of integrational processes.

2. Modern integrational processes:

- the character of institutions of European integration,

- stages of integration processes,

- the fundamental models of European integration,

- the main stages of European integration,

- perspectives for development of the European Union.

Having completed the course, students are expected:

in the field of KNOWLEDGE to know:

• basic elements of the notion of Europe,

• origins of idea of the European unity,

• main stages of European integration,

• general rules of functioning of the contemporary European Union,

• basic factors determining future developments of united Europe.

in the field of SKILLS to be able to:

• explain origins of the contemporary integrational processes in Europe,

• identify the differences between main models of European integration,

• describe the main instruments and mechanisms of European integration in historical and contemporary perspective,

• analyze publications and media information on the European Union.

in the field of SOCIAL COMPETENCIES to manage to:

• formulate own opinions on functioning and main directions of the European Union,

• make a critical assessments of different information on undergoings in Europe,

• to show independence of thought in constant searching of knowledge and information concerning past and presence of European unity.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Graded pass.

The final assessments is based on following elements:

- student's activity during the course

- making an individual presentation.
