Short description:

The seminar is an invitation to students to conduct research - analysis of media content (quantitative and qualitative), which will help determine the role of the media in the process of European integration. Classes will have two parts - theoretical and complementary analytical. The presentation of the results of research already carried out in various EU Member States conducted in the first few classes will serve as an example of an acceptable research perspective, inspire students to undertake, under the tutor's supervision, independent analysis of media content.The subject of the analysis will be various media materials related to selected current issues present in the European public sphere.

Full description:

An analytical seminar. We will examine the degree of Europeanization of the Polish public sphere. We will determine the functions fulfilled by the media on various problems encountered in the process of unification of the continent. First, media information and educational functions will be considered in relation to the institutional unification of Europe. We will examine the presence of EU topics. The media image of EU institutions, programs and common policies implemented as well as current problems faced by EU institutions and Member States (e.g. coronavirus) will be analyzed. Secondly, the role of the media is also to create a cultural environment conducive to the emergence of a European identity. Therefore, media materials will be analyzed in terms of their interest in the issues of EU countries, the use of stereotypes or sepisation (invalidation practices). The premise is the publication of materials prepared by students.

Topics of individual classes:

1-4 Overview of content analyzes carried out by European researchers

5-7 Review of methodological positions focusing on media functions and text: agenda setting, classic content analysis, critical discourse analysis, narrative structure analysis

8- 12 Work on student projects - choosing the subject of analysis, determining the size of the research sample, preparing categorization keys (presentation of methods for creating categorization keys), choosing the measurement unit; hypothesis and verification; preparing research reports

13 - 14 Presentations of student projects.

15 - Attempt to answer questions selected from the following:

• To what extent are the Polish media responsible for the successes and failures of the unification process;

• Europe as a conflict in the Polish media - politicizing the position in the debate on the progress of the integration process;
