ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

This course deals with the functioning and cooperation of the European Union with countries in the Middle East. The area stretches from Turkey in the north to Yemen in the south and from Libya in the west to Iran in the east.

Full description:

The seminar on the history of political, social, and economic relations between the European and Middle Eastern countries in 20th century.

Modern European problems related to the situation in the Arab countries will also be discussed, including:

- The history of the contacts between Europe and the countries in the Middle East and North Africa; European influences on the social, political and economic life in the 20th century.

From the situation in the 21st century, the discussion will include the following topics:

- What can Europe do in the Middle East to help with the refugee crisis?

- Europe – Turkey, the Kurds and the fight against ISIS (the West needs both Turkey and the Kurds to fight ISIS)

- USA, EU, Russia-Syria, possibilities of solving the problem

- The conflict in Yemen – some little known aspects

- Iran after the nuclear deal: the EU interests

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Students receive a grade from a final test or presentations given in teams. The course is passed after obtaining min. 51% of the points from the test or a grade of at least "3" from the presentation.
