Short description:

The aim is to teach Modern Greek students the basic concepts of linguistics, outline the discipline’s modern history as well as presenting an introduction to linguistic analysis (general linguistics).

Full description:

The classes are in the form of a seminar for year one of Modern Greek Studies. The aim is to teach Modern Greek students the basic concepts of linguistics, outline the discipline’s modern history as well as presenting an introduction to linguistic analysis (general linguistics).

Special attention will be paid to internal synchronic linguistics.

3. Languages from the Indo-European family (3 meetings)

4. History of modern linguistics (3 meetings)

5. General linguistics (3 meetings)

Learning outcomes:

Learning outcomes

a) Knowledge:

- basic knowledge on the place of philology in the system of disciplines and the specificity of its object of study and methodology

- being aware of the relationships between the philological sciences and other humanities disciplines

- knowing the basic terminology of synchronic and diachronic linguistics in Polish (with elements of Latin terminology) and elementary knowledge on the latest research methods and main development directions in contemporary linguistics

- basic knowledge on the place of Greek among the Indo-European languages and its importance for the development of modern languages and contemporary scientific disciplines

b) Skills:

- being able to present argumentation referring to the opinions of others, polemicize critically with the arguments of others, and formulate conclusions

c) Competences:

- being aware of the limited scope of one’s knowledge and skills;

- seeing the need for continual learning and improving one’s professional competence, especially by improving language skills; flexibly defining the directions of one’s own development

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Assessment will be based on the students’ activity in class and a conversation after the course (on topics covered during practical classes and in the literature).
