Short description: |
The course aims to familiarize students with the greatest Greek writers of the 20th century, mainly writers of prose. Thus, the output of the most well-known and valued writers of novels, essays and plays will be discussed extensively. |

Upon completing the course students will: - be aware of the diversity of Greek and explain its importance in the history of Greek culture - have basic knowledge on the structures and vocabulary of Ancient Greek enabling them to identify Greek roots in scientific terminology and to work with texts by ancient authors - master the rudiments of knowledge on Greek metrics, poetics, topoi, and rhetoric - know how to make proper use of dictionaries, grammar books, and auxiliary materials - be able to compare and verify the translation of a selected ancient text with the Greek original - be aware of the limited scope of their own knowledge and skills - see the need for continual learning and improving one’s professional competence, especially by improving language skills; flexibly define the directions of their own development |

Learning outcomes: |
Students who fully complete the syllabus will: - be aware of the main problems in the work of a translator of 20th-century literary texts - know how to make proper use of dictionaries, grammar books, and auxiliary materials - identify and characterize literary periods, trends and directions in 20th-century Greek literature; describe Greek literary output - be able to retrieve, assess, select and use information from different written and electronic sources - present simple research problems, orally or in writing, in Polish or Modern Greek, also using various sources and critically referencing the literature of the subject - be able to present cohesive and logical argumentation with references to the opinions of others, polemicize critically with the arguments of others, and formulate conclusions - be able to read, analyse and interpret literary texts (prose, poetry, drama) and academic texts in Modern Greek, placing them within a historical and cultural context - be aware of the limited scope of their own knowledge and skills - see the need for continual learning and improving one’s professional competence, especially by improving language skills; flexibly define the directions of their own development - appreciate the importance of Greek heritage in Polish and European culture and develop a sense of responsibility for its preservation - be aware of the existence of an ethical dimension in research and in their own work |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Students will be assessed on the basis of: - how well they are prepared for class - being active in class - a presentation of a selected book (an oral report and supervising a joint reading of 2-3 excerpts from the text) - commitment to the best possible translation into Polish of a few excerpts from New Greek works. |
