Course of practical classes totalling 180 hours (per year)

Students will learn the basics of contemporary Modern Greek (Demotic, Koini Neoelliniki), spoken and written, on material chosen by the teacher:

- obtaining knowledge on the basic phenomena of Modern Greek phonetics, morphology, and syntax

- learning about some elements of Greek culture (songs, cuisine, holiday customs)

- practicing listening comprehension skills on short utterances

- translating simple Modern Greek texts (e.g. song lyrics) with the help of a dictionary

- practicing expressing thoughts in writing

- communicating in everyday situations

II. System of accentuation / Τονισμός:

- monotonic and elements of tritonic

- *pronunciation of individual sounds

KNOWLEDGE:

1. recognizing letters of the Modern Greek alphabet and knowing the rules of their simplified phonetic transcription into Polish

2. knowing the basic rules of pronunciation (accents and intonation)

3. basic knowledge on selected problems of Modern Greek phonetics, morphology, and syntax (see overview of material below)

4. familiarity with basic vocabulary related to the topics defined below in the overview of material

5. familiarity with elements of the history, literature and culture of modern Greece, in particular:

a. addressing others (greetings, goodbyes, introductions, etc.)

b. the cycle of traditional holidays (Christmas, Easter)

c. national holidays and anniversaries (e.g. Ochi Day, the anniversary of the 1821 Uprising)

d. some dates and events from the history of modern Greece

e. some trends and representatives of literature, arts, etc. (Theodorakis, Cavafy, Kazantzakis).

SKILLS:

1. reproducing texts with familiar vocabulary in writing (alphabet and orthography)

2. understanding simple or simplified Modern Greek texts read with the help of a dictionary

3. producing short utterances (or written statements) on selected topics (e.g. health, the weather, shopping, family)

4. communicating with Greeks in simple daily situations, in particular:

a. using phrases of greeting, goodbye, and polite phrases

b. extending season’s greetings

c. building simple questions

6. using dictionaries, grammar books and other teaching aids, also in electronic form.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES:

Students will be assessed for activeness and language effectiveness on the basis of:

1. active participation in classes and being prepared for class

2. individual written projects (short written tests, dictation, essays, etc.)

3. short oral group presentations and dialogues (role-playing)

4. written semester test

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Students will be assessed for their linguistic activeness and effectiveness, based on individual written projects (short tests, dictations, essays. etc.), brief group presentations and dialogues (role-playing), written tests at the end of each semester.
