The subject of the course is the contemporary New Greek language - koini neoelliniki (κοινή νεοελληνική), previously known as demotic, with elements of dialects and katharevousa (set phrases, sayings, proverbs).

Higher-level course involving 10 hours per week of practical classes. The material is chosen by the teacher (a native speaker).

The material corresponds to the Ellinomatheia II level.

This is a course in contemporary Modern Greek - Koini Neoelliniki (κοινή νεοελληνική), previously known as Demotic, with elements of dialects and Katharevousa (set phrases, sayings, proverbs).

An intermediate course of practical classes totalling 120 hours (per year). The material selected by the teacher corresponds to the B1 level of the international Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek.

Students will:

- improve their knowledge of contemporary Modern Greek (Demotic, Koini Neoelliniki) in speech and writing

- learn elements of the “learned language” Katharevousa

- supplement and expand their knowledge of Modern Greek morphology and syntax

- acquire the ability to understand spoken and written popular and literary utterances and texts

- practice expressing their thoughts in writing

- improve their communication in everyday situations

- learn about the literature and culture of contemporary Greeks (texts of poetry and prose, daily newspapers and Greek websites, excerpts from texts in literary periodicals, etc.)

- prepare by themselves (and present individually) 300 pages of a Modern Greek text agreed upon with the teachers.

A. Grammar issues (Demotic)

I. Improving pronunciation and learning more about rules of accentuation / Βελτιώση της προσφοράς και τονισμού.

II. Orthography exercises / Ορθογραφικές ασκήσεις.

III. Supplementary information on phonetics and phonology / Πρόσθετες πληροφορίες στο θέμα της φωνητικής και φωνολογίας:

- alternative consonant groups (e.g. φτ/φθ; χτ/χθ; κτ/ χτ; πτ/φτ),

- euphonic additions (γ between vowels)

- selected phonetic phenomena (hiatus, diphthongization, synizesis, elision, etc.)

- rules for preserving or losing the final -ν

IV. Morphology / Μορφολογία:

1. Nouns / Όνομα: continuation of inflected forms:

- imparisyllabic masculine / ανισοσύλλαβα αρσενικά (-ης,-ας

/-ήδες,-άδες, -ές/-έδες; -ους/-ούδες),

- imparisyllabic feminine / ανισοσύλλαβα θηλυκά (-ά/-άδες),

- feminine / θηλικά with -ω and -ού,

- feminine of the ancient type / αρχαιόκλιτα θηλυκά (σκέψη< σκέψις,

δύναμη <δύναμις),

- neuter / ουδέτερα (-ος/-η),

- the plural of surnames

- singular only (singularia tantum),

- changing their meaning depending on the number.

2. *Articles / Άρθρο:

- detailed problems of using definite and indefinite articles

3. Adjectives / Επίθετα:

inflection:

- triple-termination with -ής/-ιά/-ί; -ύς/-ιά/-ύ,

- imparisyllabic with -ης/-α/-ικο,

- the most frequent exceptions and their declension (πολύς/πολλή/πολύ;

συνεχής,-ής,-ές),

- irregular and defective comparison

- comparisons with the use of από, τόσο-όσο, που.

4. Numerals / Αριθμητικά:

- cardinal numbers / απόλυτα: 1–100,000,

- ordinal numbers / τακτικά: 1–1000,

- letter numerals

5. *Pronouns / Αντωνυμίες:

- repeating of pronouns (“repetitive” pronouns)

- special uses of a pronoun with an article (εγώ ο ίδιος, αυτός ο...),

- intensive pronouns (μόνος μου; δικός του; οι δυο μας; Κοντά

μου; ο εαυτός μου),

- using indefinite pronouns (κάποιος, κανείς, καθένας,

αρκετοί),

- using the pronouns τέτοιος, ό,τι, όσος.

6. Verbs / Ρήματα – voices / φωνές:

- forms of the passive voice of conjugation II verbs

- transforming sentences in active voice into passive voice

- passive voice with από,

- differences in the meanings of verbs in active voice and reflexive-passive voice (δανείζω, δανείζομαι),

- verbs with only active or only passive forms (deponentia).

7. Verbs – tenses / χρόνοι and moods / εγκλίσεις:

- further conjugation of past and future perfect tenses and the subjunctive and imperative mood

- the present perfect tense (παρακειμενος),

- imperative mood using να, να μην,

- ways of expressing a wish (θα ήθελα),

- impersonal verbs / απρόσωπα,

- irregular verbs / ανώμαλα,

- participles / μετοχή.

8. Prepositions / Προθέσεις:

- using από, με, παρά, αντί, δίχως, χωρίς.

9. Adverbs / Επιρρήματα:

- adverbs with -ως / -α,

- different uses of πια, όχι, κιόλας,

- forming adverbs from pronouns

- comparison of adverbs

10. Interjections / Επιφωνήματα:

– ρε, καλέ, μακάρι, κρίμα, στάσου.

V. Syntax / Σύνταξη – selected issues:

1. Special functions of cases. / Ειδικές λειτουργίες των

3. *The place of pronouns in sentences / Θέση των προθέσεων σε προτάσεις:

- affirmative sentences

- interrogative sentences

4. *Negatives with δεν and μη / Αρνητικές φράσεις και προτάσεις.

5. Syntax of compound sentences / Σύνταξη των υποτακτικών

προτάσεων:

- ούτε...ούτε...; ή...ή...; είτε...είτε...; ενώ, καθώς, πριν, μόλις, επειδή,

ότι, πως, που, μη, ίσως, μήπως, όσο, όποιος, αν και...

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE:

1. expanding and deepening the knowledge gained in the first year about the morphology and syntax of Modern Greek

2. learning about elements of “learned language” (Katharevousa) and some features of dialects

3. expanding and enriching the vocabulary appropriate for the language skill level

4. learning about elements of the history of modern Greece (the period of Turkish domination, Crete under Venetian rule, the Greek uprising (the Klephti and the Armatoles), the formation and history of the Greek state)

5. knowledge on elements of the geography of modern Greece: lands and islands, “sites of memory” (Athens, Messolonghi, Psara, Chios, Smyrna, Thessaloniki, etc.)

6. recognizing elements of tradition (costume, music, cuisine, architecture, etc.)

7. learning about elements of contemporary culture, with a special focus on the lives of young people in Greece (studies, film, sports, entertainment, etc.)

SKILLS:

1. using the grammatical forms and syntactic structures learned in class

2. with the help of a dictionary, reading contemporary medium-difficult texts in Demotic (including selected literary texts: songs, poems, short stories)

3. translating simple literary texts (excerpts from contemporary poetry and prose)

4. reproducing texts with familiar vocabulary in writing (alphabet and orthography)

5. producing written texts (essay, letter, complaint, CV, recommendation, etc.)

6. producing utterances on selected topics (formulating and defending one’s own opinion)

7. communicating with Greeks in daily situations

SOCIAL COMPETENCES:

1. awareness of the limited scope of their knowledge and the need for continual learning

2. being able to work individually and in a group (role-playing)

3. organizing their own work (Modern Greek texts to prepare on their own)

Reading in the original (individual studies, 300 pages) – the course involves individual work on a text (selected books) concluding with a test in front of the teacher of Modern Greek. The form of this test (oral/written) will be decided by the teacher. The grade is entered as a credit for required reading.
