Short description:

Przedmiotem kursu jest współczesny język nowogrecki – kini neoeliniki (κοινή νεοελληνική) wraz z wyrażeniami idiomatycznymi, formami obocznymi, dialektalnymi, terminologią naukową oraz elementami katarewusy i języka liturgii.

Kurs najwyższy (III) w formie ćwiczeń w wymiarze 2 godz./tyg. Materiał dobierany przez wykładowcę (native-speaker) odpowiada poziomowi B2 międzynarodowego Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek.

W ramach kursu obowiązuje samodzielne przygotowanie lektur nowogreckich w uzgodnieniu z wykładowcami w wymiarze 1200 stron tekstu oraz ich indywidualne zaliczenie.

Full description:

This is a course in contemporary Modern Greek - Koini Neoelliniki (κοινή νεοελληνική) together with idiomatic expressions, variant and dialectal forms, scientific terminology and elements of Katharevousa and the language of liturgy.

Highest level course (III) of practical classes, 2 hours a week. The material is selected by the teacher (a native speaker) and corresponds to the B2 level of the international Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek.

The course requires students to study Modern Greek reading agreed upon with the teachers, 1,200 pages in volume, and prepare for an individual test to obtain their credit.

Highest level course (III) of practical classes, 2 hours a week. Material to be selected by the teacher.

Students will:

- improve their knowledge of contemporary Modern Greek (Demotic, Koini Neoelliniki) in speech and writing

- learn specialist vocabulary (document, official letter, advertising, information technology, science)

- expand their knowledge of elements of the “learned language” Katharevousa

- develop the ability to understand longer utterance and texts, oral and written, both literary and scientific

- practice expressing their thoughts in writing on a set topic

- improve communication in everyday situations

- familiarize themselves with selected literature and trends in the culture of contemporary Greeks (texts of poetry, prose and drama, literary press and Greek websites, essays, etc.)

- by themselves, prepare 1,200 pages of Modern Greek text as agreed upon with the teachers.

The material corresponds to level B2 of the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek.

A. Grammar issues

I. Phonetics:

- words differing in accent (e.g. θείος / θειος, δουλεία / δουλειά)

- division into syllables

II. Morphology:

1. Nouns / Ονομα: continuation of inflected forms:

- imparisyllabic masculine / ανισοσύλλαβα

αρσενικά (-ης,-ας/-ήδες,-άδες; -ές/-έδες;

-ους/-ούδες);

- imparisyllabic feminine / ανισο-

σύλλαβα θηλικά (-ά/-άδες);

- feminine / θηλικά with -ω and -ού,

- feminine of the ancient type / αρχαιόκλιτα

θηλικά (σκέψη< σκέψις, δύναμη <δύναμις);

- neuter / ουδέτερα (-ος/-η);

- the plural of surnames

- singular only (singularia tantum),

- changing their meaning depending on the number.

2. *Articles / Αρθρο:

- detailed problems of using definite and indefinite articles

3. Adjectives / Επίθετα:

inflection:

- triple-termination with -ής/-ιά/-ί; -ύς/-ιά/-ύ;

- imparisyllabic with ης/-α/-ικο;

- the most frequent exceptions and their declension (πολύς/πολλή/πολύ; συνεχής,-ής,

-ές);

- irregular and defective comparison

- comparisons with the use of από, τόσο-όσο, που.

4. Numerals / Αριθμητικά:

- cardinal numbers / απόλυτα: 1–100,000,

- ordinal numbers / τακτικά: 1–1000,

- letter numerals

5. *Pronouns / Αντωνυμίες:

- repeating of pronouns (“repetitive” pronouns)

- special uses of a pronoun with an article (εγώ ο ίδιος, αυτός ο…);

- intensive pronouns (μόνος μου; δικός

του; οι δυο μας; κοντά μου; ο εαυτός μου);

- using indefinite pronouns (κάποιος, κανείς, καθένας, αρκετοί);

- using the pronouns τέτοιος, ό,τι, όσος.

- forms of the passive voice of conjugation II verbs

- transforming sentences in active voice into passive voice

- passive voice with από,

- differences in the meanings of verbs in active voice and reflexive-passive voice (δανείζω,

KNOWLEDGE:

1. improving knowledge of Modern Greek, and in particular:

- expanding and deepening knowledge of grammatical structures

- identifying typical elements of Katharevousa

- learning basic selected specialist vocabulary

2. learning about elements of the culture and tradition of contemporary Greece, and in particular:

- analysing selected Greek-language sources for the history of modern Greece (e.g. Ypsilantis’ proclamation, excerpts from Makriyannis’ memoirs, Trikoupis’ article, the Politechnio anniversary, etc.)

- identifying selected trends of contemporary culture by analysing fragments of films and newsreels (rebetiko)

- analysing and interpreting selected literary texts (excerpts from poetry, prose, drama)

- understanding specialist texts (operating manuals, advertisements, documents, questionnaires and forms, etc.)

SKILLS:

1. with the help of a dictionary, reading medium-difficult contemporary texts in Demotic

2. producing longer written texts (essay, letter, review, abstract/synopsis)

3. producing utterances on selected topics (formulating and defending one’s own opinion)

4. communicating with Greeks in daily situations

5. selecting (extracting) specific information from specialist and academic texts

SOCIAL COMPETENCES:

- awareness of the limited scope of their knowledge and the need for continual learning (especially improving language skills)

- organizing their own work

- being able to work in a group (role-playing)

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Assessment criteria (in the course of the academic year):

Credits: Individual written projects, essays, etc., group presentations and dialogues (role-playing), individual presentations, written tests at the end of each semester.

Reading in the original (individual reading, 1200 pages) - the course involves individual work on texts (selected books) ending in a test during a meeting with the teacher of New Greek. The kind of test (oral/written) will be decided by the teacher. The mark will be entered as a credit for reading.
