Short description:

A methodological perspective on the problem of multiculturality.

Full description:

Issues: The methodological perspective of the problem of multiculturality. West - East, images of the world, cultural codes, behaviour models in cultures, cultural categories - the individual versus society. During classes students will present reports from their required reading. Discussions will aim to explain the legitimacy of the methodology applied to the cultural phenomenon studied by the author of the book. The issues covered during the course create the meta-context of cultural studies of the Mediterranean civilization.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

- in-depth knowledge on the types and specificity of disciplines studying culture;

- knowing terminology from philosophy and cultural anthropology at an advanced level;

- understanding the specificity of regional studies;

- knowing and understanding the main challenges of studying culture and relations between civilizations and of preserving cultural heritage;

- organized, in-depth, detailed knowledge on the theory and methodologies of studies on culture and relations between civilizations;

- knowing and understanding the relationships between disciplines studying culture and other disciplines from the humanities and selected social sciences, at a level enabling multi- and interdisciplinary collaboration with representatives of those fields;

- detailed knowledge on contemporary development trends in cultural studies and on research traditions;

- knowing and understanding the principles of cultural studies methodology, including advanced methods of analysis and interpretation;

- thorough knowledge on methods of interpreting texts of culture;

- knowing and understanding the main principles related to copyright;

- detailed knowledge on contemporary trends in studies on culture;

- understanding the correlation between the development of culture and social changes.

Competences:

- cognitive and functional competence in adapting the appropriate comparative methodology to the object of research;

- being able to identify the research methods used to describe diverse cultures and social formations with their institutions, values, and patterns of behaviour;

- interpreting and analysing texts of culture, accounting for their historical and regional context;

- taking part actively in discussions on cultural studies issues, formulating logical argumentation and critical conclusions; responding to the views of others and to the hypotheses of researchers;

- making use of the search tools that are the most important for cultural studies, especially internet databases and periodicals.

Social competences:

- understanding the principles of tolerance and cultural differences;

- when taking part in discussions, respecting the views of one’s partners and using substantive arguments.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Assessment is based on a point system. Elements subject to evaluation: papers presented in class, active participation and attendance, quality of participation in discussions (ideas, argumentation), credit system at the end.
