Full description:

Upon completion of the course the student has no difficulty in understanding any kind of spoken language, whether live or broadcast, even when delivered at fast native speed, provided s/he has some time to get familiar with the accent.

S/he can read with ease virtually all forms of the written language, including abstract, structurally or linguistically complex texts such as manuals, specialised articles and literary works.

S/he can take part effortlessly in any conversation or discussion and has a good familiarity with idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms. S/he can express herself/himself fluently and convey finer shades of meaning precisely. If s/he does have a problem s/he can backtrack and restructure around the difficulty so smoothly that other people are hardly aware of it.

S/he can present a clear, smoothly-flowing description or argument in a style appropriate to the context and with an effective logical structure which helps the recipient to notice and remember significant points.

S/he can write clear, smoothly-flowing text in an appropriate style. S/he can write complex letters, reports or articles which present a case with an effective logical structure which helps the recipient to notice and remember significant points. S/he can write summaries and reviews of professional or literary works.

On completing the course, the student

1. expresses himself/herself with ease, precision, fluency and spontaneity on all topics, both

orally and in writing

2. adapts the style of oral and written discourse to a potential recipient, applying logical

structure which enables the recipient to find relevant or significant points

3. summarizes and reviews critically any information, heard or read, in the press , specialist

or literary texts

4. makes analysis, synthesis or appropriate interpretation of instructions to perform e.g. test tasks, specialist lectures and presentations, including colloquial phrases as well as unfamiliar specialist terminology

5. uses a wide range of idiomatic and colloquial phrases which enable expression of various

shades of meaning in a precise way

6. solves independently few communication problems, paraphrasing expressions in a subtle,

unnoticed way to the recipient

A general C2 English course for University of Warsaw students from different faculties. There will be an emphasis on building fluency and confidence in spoken communication throughout, with some listening and reading activities to build vocabulary, as well as writing tasks to assess range and accuracy of grammar and vocabulary in practice.

The topics below will be used as a lens to consider students’ own preferences and practices, but also to consider wider societal issues and cross-cultural comparisons. The goal is to take “everyday” topics that students may have practiced before at a more simple level, and expand their range of vocabulary and develop opinions to express complex descriptions, arguments and critiques.

Teaching methods:

Communicative discussions (pairs, groups) on a range of topics

Presentations and panel discussions

Writing critical reviews

Advanced listening and reading from IELTS practice tests, or authentic articles and videos.

Regular individual feedback on writing and speaking.

Students are not required to buy a textbook.

Assessment will adhere to the university's scoring system and final scores will be decided through performance throughout the semester (active participation in classes and timely completion of all required tasks or assignments) and assessments addressing skills, topics and functions practiced during the semester (using an adapted IELTS rubric).

Notes:

Language courses include two dates (with the exception of e-language classes). Students who register in the winter semester will be automatically registered for the summer term. If they wish to resign, they must deregister ( the summer semester) from February 01 to February 19, 2024
