Upon completion a student can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization; s/he can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; s/he can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. |
Learning outcomes: |
Listening The student can: - identify the main and secondary topics of lectures, talks, academic debates, discussions; - relate to the content presented; - perform an analysis and a synthesis of the heard text. Speaking The student can: - summarize orally information, research results, opinions and arguments of the author, contained in a scientific text or an article published in a professional journal; - paraphrase the original text; formulate clear conclusions and opinions; - use an appropriate style, consistent with the convention and an appropriate manner of presentation; - use phrases and rhetorical techniques; use non-verbal elements of presentation; Reading The student can: - define the purpose and recipient of a given publication; - find useful information in source texts and find the main point of the entire text as well as of the individual paragraphs; - read with understanding and critically analyze academic texts; - analyze and interpret t presented facts and opinions; - find and critically evaluate the arguments used; - elicit the meaning of unknown words from the context; can use various types of dictionaries. Verbal interaction The student can: - take part in a scientific discussion or debate, presenting her/his own arguments and opinions, and asking questions; - argue with arguments of other interlocutors assertively and in accordance with the convention; Writing The student can: - summarize in writing information given, research results, opinions and arguments of the author, contained in a scientific text, an article published in a professional journal, based on notes; - write an abstract of his own presentation; - paraphrase the author's statements. |
