  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

It is assumed that students know the basics of English grammar.

To continue classes in the second and the third semester, the student must pass the precending semester of the course.

Short description:

The aim of the course, which presents and puts into practice the modern approach to teaching and learning English grammar within language education, is to systematise and deepen the students’ knowledge of English grammar by developing students' grammar awareness by means of specially selected sets of grammar tasks/exercises which the students are required to do. The course aims to preprare students to teach English in the kindergarten at the first and second educational stage.

The topics covered include: the tense system of English, conditional clauses, modal verbs, reported speech, verb complementation, articles and relative clauses, the category of number and passive voice.

Full description:

The aim of the course is to systematise and deepen the students’ knowledge of English grammar and its usage.

Objectives:

- to familiarize students with the grammatical terminology used in describing English grammar

- to improve their grammatical accuracy

- to teach the students the skills of grammaticality judgement and error recognition

- to guide the students to discover and formulate rules of English grammar

- to develop students’ cognitive interests and to support their intellectual development by means of enriching their knowledge

- to help the students to nocie and avoid the interference of Polish structures and lexis while using English

- to enable the students to use academic knowledge to obtain the practical skills necessary in a profession of a teacher of a foreign language at the first and second stage of education, including teaching the grammar and lexis of English

- tense and aspect

- different types of verb

- the functions of Present Simple, Present Progressive, Past Simple and Past Progressive

- the progressive aspect

- the perfective aspect

- Present Perfect vs. Simple Past

- Present Perfect Progressive vs. Present Perfect Simple

- Past Perfect Simple vs. Past Perfect Continuous

- ways of talking about the future

2. Conditional clauses in English

Semester 2

1. English modal auxiliaries:

- formal features of auxiliary verbs and of modal auxiliaries

- deontic and epistemic modality

-similarities and differences in the use of modal verbs

2. Verb complementation - the infinitive and the gerund.

Semester 3

1. Indirect Speech

- direct vs. indirect speech

-the sequence of tenses

- modals in Indirect Speech

2. Article usage

- reference of nouns and the use of articles

- article usage with count and non-count nouns

3. Relative clauses

-restrictive and non-restrictive relative clauses

-free relatives

4. The category of number

- invariably singular nouns

- pluralia tantum

- regular and irregular plurals

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge

K_W01 - the graduate knows and understands to an advanced degree selected facts and phenomena related to the study of linguistics, in partiticular to the grammar of English, which have practical application in teaching foreign languages in kindergartens and at the first and second educational stages.

K_W02 - the graduate knows and understands essential terminology related to linguistics relevant to teaching foreign languages.

K_W16 - the graduate knows and understands to a significant extent the process of interpersonal communication and social patterns in Polish and English, the problems in communication resulting form their own gramamtical mistakes.

Skills

K_U01 - the graduate is able to search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information concerning English grammar using a variety of sources and methods in Polish and English.

K_U02 - the graduate is able to independently plan and implement typical projects related to teaching English grammar in kindergartens, primary schools and in other institutions related to teaching foreign languages.

K_U09 - the graduate is able to analyse their own actions and identify possible areas within teaching and learning English grammar which require changes in the future, espcially those related to correcting their own mistakes.

K_U19 - using the basic organisational skills, the graduate is able to plan and carry out tasks related to teaching English grammar.

Social competences

K_K01 - the graduate is prepared to pursue the lifelong learning of English grammar.

K_K02 - the graduate is prepared to reflect on the level of their skills and knowledge concerning teaching English grammar, to constantly develop professionally and personally, to self-access their competences, improve their skills, plan their development and training.

K_K04 - the graduate is prepared to conduct interpersonal and intercultural communication mediating with participants of the teaching-learning process in a local and global context.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Continuous assessment (students' preparation for the classes and activity during the class): 10%

Final written test : 60% (the test passmark is 60%)

Work on the e-learning platform: 30%

Methods of assessment of the material taught online: asking questions orally, short quizzes and checking students' tests on the platform. The materials for self-study are available on the course website on the Kampus platform. Doing the tasks on time is a necessary condition to pass the course.

Classes are devoted to the problem of tenses and conditionals in English. The notion of aspect and the division of verbs into stative and dynamic are also discussed. A number of practical exercises are done in order to consolidate the knowledge acquired.
