Prerequisites (description):

The student completed the first two semesters of the Plurilingual and Pluricultural Education course and has basic knowledge concerning the subject of education for linguistic and cultural diversity.

Short description:

The aim of the course is to enable the students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the Plurilingual and Pluricultural Education course in the first year in the classroom at the 1st and 2nd educational stage.

During the classes the students will gain basic knowledge of the pluralistic approaches in language education as well as institutions, programmes and projects carried out in different countries, which promote such approaches.

The students will acquire the skills necessary for introducing elements of awakening to languages and cultures into a foreign language lesson plan and for organizing school and interschool projects promoting linguistic and cultural diversity.

Topic areas

1. Introduction to the course. Justification of the need for plurilingual and pluricultural education during a foreign language lesson. Students' presentations of their experiences as far as the learning and teaching of foreign languages is concerned.

2. Presentation of programs and educational projects promoting linguistic and cultural diversity

3. Presentation of sources connected with pluralistic approaches which are available on the websites of educational institutions in Poland and in other countries

4. Presentation of didactic materials prepared by students of the Centre in the past (the materials produced as part of the JALING project and other selected materials)

5. Analysis of selected didactic materials related to pluralistic approaches in terms of the possibility of their implamantation to the language education of students at the 1st and 2nd stage of school education

6. Designing and presentation of projects promoting linguistic and cultural diversity in Poland

7. Summing up and evaluation

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge: the student knows and understands

S_W01 to an in-depth degree chosen facts, theories, institutions, processes and phenomena related to pluralistic approches and the language policy of the European Union, which have practical application in teaching foreign languages at the first and second educational stages

S_W02 essential terminology from the field of plurilingual and pluricultural education

S_W03 the methods, norms, procedures and standards of practice in educational institutions which promote plurilingual and pluricultural education

S_W16 to a significant extent the process of interpersonal communication and social patterns in Polish

Skills: the student is able to

S_U01 search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information, using a variety of sources and methods in Polish and English and, optionally, in French or German

S_U15 speak and write in a precise and coherent way in Polish on topics related to plurilingual and pluricultural education, applying different theoretical approaches and using findings from disciplines related to the pluralistic approaches to language teaching and learning

S_U20 work in a team, performing various roles, is able to accept and assign tasks, possesses the elementary organisational skills necessary for achieving aims connected with designing and implementing professional educational activities

Social competences: the student is prepared to

S_K01 pursue lifelong learning and develop their own plurilingual competence as well as that of their learners

S_K05 interact and work in a group, performing various roles

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Assessment methods and criteria: The basis for passing the exercises is:

- attendance

- preparation for classes: knowledge of the recommended bibliographic items (brochures, articles and websites), preparation of the required presentations, documentation of the classes

- activity (participation in discussion and reflection),

- presentations related to the topic of classes,

Assessment criteria for classes:

Attendance at all classes is required. One absence is allowed in a series of seven classes per semester. The remaining absences must be made up for by attending classes of another group, with the consent of the lecturer, or by doing additional work.

In order to pass the classes, it is necessary to obtain a positive grade for all the works subject to assessment.

For each work, the student receives a certain number of points, each time converted into grades. The grade at the end of the semester is the arithmetic mean of the grades. partial

In the event of failure to complete the work on time or obtaining an unsatisfactory grade, the student has the right to complete the assignment on an additional date agreed with the lecturer or in a re-sit session.

Student workload:

- 15 hours of participation in (contact) exercises during the academic year

5 hours of own work (preparation of a final paper, work necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes).

1.0 ECTS - awarded as below:

- contact hours, class attendance and active participation = 0.5 ECTS

- preparation of obligatory presentations = 0.5 ECTS
