Short description:

The Year Three Practical English course encourages students to share experiences and points of view with other class members. It aims to build a sense of critical distance towards a range of social and cultural issues; encourage students to adopt greater independence and responsibility towards their studies; and to stimulate and support the student’s growing sense of confidence both in their listening skills and use of spoken English, which will prepare them for their future role in the classroom. For the most part, in-class materials will comprise original materials/authentic sources. The importance of including authentic listening task each week cannot be stressed enough.

Full description:

Practical English classes in the third year are intended to promote greater confidence in the student’s ability to comment on a range of familiar topics.

In-class material is intended to highlight this approach. By the end of the course the student should feel confident in presenting their views (and the views of others) on a particular theme.

Listening tasks should serve the purpose of highlighting the importance of vocabulary and sentence structure when dealing with a range of academic and non-academic situations. They should also expose the student as much as possible to a wide range of spoken English and should, therefore, be based upon authentic material wherever possible.

The main spoken assignments take the form of a retelling of a lecture and are based on the the speaking section of PTE Academic test (Re-tell lecture component).

In order for the student to feel a sense of development it is critical that they are made aware of the importance of self-study.
