Prerequisites (description):

The seminar is intended for students who have completed the Practical English courses and English language teaching courses during the 1st and 2nd year program at CKNJOiEE.


Seminar attendees are required to to be able to use English at the C1 CEFR level including English for Academic Purposed and English for school communication.

Short description:

The aim of the diploma seminar is to prepare students for writing their Bachelor's thesis including a theoretical part based on literature review and the original research designed, conducted and described by the author of the thesis.

Classes are conducted in a 'blended learning' mode:

14 hours of synchronic classes in the classroom (scheduled according to CKNJOiEE timetable) 16 hours of asynchronic/remote learning classes on the 'Kampus' platform

Full description:

The aim of the seminar is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to plan and carry out an original research project in the field of teaching English and/or second language acquisition and to present it in the form of a diploma thesis. During the seminar, students will learn about the methods of conducting research in the field of FL classroom-based research and second language acquisition. The goal of this part of the seminar is to design the research procedure and conduct the research. Students formulate a research question and research goals and select appropriate methods of collecting empirical data along with choose methods of analysis and presentation of this data. In addition, they learn about the formal requirements set for the diploma thesis including: editorial techniques, rules for editing an academic text in English, reviewing subject literature, documenting and quoting sources, creating a bibliography, plagiarism issues.

The scope of topics is determined by individual supervisors and is included in the part of the description devoted to the implementation of classes in the 2020L cycle in the groups assigned to them.

Skills: the graduate is able to

S_U01 search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information, using a variety of sources and methods, in Polish and English

S_U05 observe and assess the suitability of a variety of methods, procedures and best practices, and select and apply the appropriate approach with the goal of accomplishing tasks and solving problems related to foreign language teaching

S_U11 conduct an argument using the views of other authors and formulate conclusions in Polish and English, and, optionally, in French or German

S_U15 speak and write consistently and precisely in Polish and in a foreign language on topics related to selected educational matters, applying different theoretical approaches and using findings from academic disciplines relevant to their course of studies

S_U16 present their ideas, concerns, suggestions and arguments, in Polish and in a foreign language, supporting them with published opinions on the subject

S_U17 use language skills at CEFR level C1 in English and German or French, including the specificity of academic language and that of classroom communication*, or in English at level C1 and in a foreign language chosen as lektorat at CEFR level B1

Social competences: the graduate is prepared to

S_K02 reflect on the level of their skills and knowledge, constantly develop professionally and personally, self-assess their competences, improve their skills, plan their development and training

S_K06 correctly identify the priorities for the implementation of specified tasks

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

To obtain credit and complete the seminar with a positive result the student is required to:

1) submit a complete manuscript of the bachelor's thesis approved by the supervisor; the goal of the thesis needs to fall within the scope of FL teaching at the I and II educational stage and preschool; the language of the thesis needs to meet the requirements of EAP

2) attend all classes taking place in the classroom

3) complete and submit all tasks assigned by the supervisor on Kampus within deadlines

4) complete subsequent stages of writing the BA thesis in accordance with the schedule announced by the supervisor

5) submit all the components f the BA thesis written and edited according to the guidelines presented at the seminar, these include:

-research design with research goal, research question, participants, data collection instruments, data, mode of analysis

-subsequenct sections of the empirical chapter

-Introduction/Preface; Conclusion

-research description

-participant decsription

-data collection instruments description and their copies in appendices

-data description

-results presentation

-results discussion

-references (min. 12 entries)

-title page formatted according to WU guidelines

-list of tables and figures, contents, summary in Polish, keywords in English and Polish, thesis title translation onto Polish
