Type of course:

obligatory courses

Prerequisites (description):

Students of master stationary studies in Geography, profiled in hydrology and climatology who completed the course in Hydrology and Oceanography (during bachelor studies). All data for the exercises are available in digital form only. It is therefore recommended to use portable computers during classes (e.g. 1 for 2 people).

Short description:

The course presents the basic problems of water management in Poland and its relationship with the environment protection. It focuses on the estimation of available water resources, water management balance in the basin and the water quality assessment.

Full description:

The main goal of the lecture is to show the difficult situation of the country and the world: water scarcity and serious pollution of water resources. Proper water management is considered as an important factor contributing to the protection of the natural environment in terms of sustainable development. Much attention is paid to issues related to the risk management (floods, soil erosion, drought). The ways to use hydropower and waterways is also important task. Hydrosphere protection is presented as quantitative and qualitative protection of water resources and on this background the sources of pollution (agricultural, industrial, municipal) and ways of their limitations, remediation and use in the perspective of water law and international treaties requirements.

Exercises are designed to widen the knowledge coming from lectures and enable its practical application. The first part is devoted to the introduction to the legal regulations relating to water management in Poland (eg Water Framework Directive, Floods Directive, Nitrates Directive, the Water Law, Environmental Protection Law). In the principal part examples of calculating water resources, water demand and wastewater production in the administrative unit, water quality assessment based on the results of chemical analyzes and the economic water balance are discussed .

Duration of the course:

Lecture: 20 h (10 x 2 hours)

Exercise: 20 hours (10 x 2 hours)

Student's preparation for the classes:

Lecture and exam: 15 h

Exercises: 20 h

TOTAL: about 75 hours
