Short description:

Chronological survey of the history of the Turkic peoples, focusing on the Turkic states in Asia Minor. Most of the course is devoted to the Ottoman Empire from its foundation in ca. 1300 till the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923. Along with the political history, certain social, economic as well as cultural aspects will be dealt with as well.

Chronological survey of the history of the Turkic peoples, focusing on the Turkic states in Asia Minor. Most of the course is devoted to the Ottoman Empire from its foundation in ca. 1300 till the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923. Along with the political history, certain social, economic as well as cultural aspects will be dealt with as well.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

o has basic knowledge in the range of theory of humanities (literary studies or linguistics or history) necessary to understand chosen cultural aspects as far as the history of Turkey is concerned [K_W04];

o has detailed and organized knowledge of the history of Turks, Turkish states in Asia Minor and the Ottoman Empire [K_W06];

o has detailed and organized knowledge of socio-cultural issues of Turkey within the scope of natural environment and ethnic, demographic and political situation of Turkish states in Asia Minor and the Ottoman Empire [K_W09];

o has organized knowledge of natural, geopolitical and economic environment and their importance for the historical and contemporary situation of Turkey [K_W11];

o knows and understands basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of chosen theories and schools of research within the scope of studies of the history of Turkey [K_W18];

Skills:

o can indicate sources of cultural differences of oriental countries [K_U02];

o can use the knowledge of history of Turkey to analyze and interpret events taking place in the modern world [K_U04];

o can appropriately place Turkey in the context of circumstances pertinent to natural, geopolitical and economic environment [K_U05];

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Student is required to read at least six assigned readings (primary sources as well as monographs) whose contents will be discussed during the final oral exam along with the contents of the lecture and textbooks.

Evaluation upon the content of the lecture and assigned readings (written test after the first semester; oral exam after the second semester)
