ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

Classes for students of the third year of first-cycle studies. The curriculum requires a significant amount of students' own work, therefore it is necessary to be highly motivated to learn and to be able to use the available source materials.

Short description:

The following course presents a multifaceted humanistic presentation of the history and culture of the given area (with the exception of literature which is covered in a separate course). The goal of the course is to provide students with a contextual knowledge of the history, society and culture in order to prepare them to work in a multicultural society or in the country in which their studied language is being spoken. The course covers the following topics:

- physical, economic and political geography

- political, economic and social history

- history of art and culture (with the exception of literary history)

- the media

- national identity

- folklore, customs, and manners.

Full description:

The following course presents a multifaceted humanistic presentation of the history and culture of the given area (with the exception of literature which is covered in a separate course). The goal of the course is to provide students with a contextual knowledge of the history, society and culture in order to prepare them to work in a multicultural society or in the country in which their studied language is being spoken. The course covers the following topics:

- physical, economic and political geography

- political, economic and social history

- history of art and culture (with the exception of literary history)

- the media

- national identity

- folklore, customs, and manners.

Detailed course programmes are designed by instructors in respective groups.

Student effort:

60 hours – class attendance (2 ECTS)

60 godzin – self-study: reading and analysing required texts, preparing for the final test (2 ECTS)

If it is not possible to conduct classes in the form of stationary classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE:

After participating in the course, the student:

- knows and understands the relations between languages ​​and their role in culture (K1_W07);

- knows the outline of the culture of a given language area, understands the role of language in communication between people and cultures (K1_W10);

- knows and understands cultural differences which are an important factor in the formation of multicultural societies in the modern world, knows the general socio-economic and legal realities in areas related to the studied languages ​​(K1_W11);

- knows and understands the functioning of cultural institutions and has orientation in the areas related to the studied languages ​​(K1_W12);

SKILLS

After participating in the course, the student:

- can critically analyze texts as products of culture, can search, analyze, evaluate and select authentic texts in two studied foreign languages ​​and develop professional skills in the field of applied linguistics and literary studies (K1_U01)

- can recognize characteristic cultural elements and correctly interpret the ongoing socio-historical changes in relation to the realities of a given language area (K1_U03);

- can define priorities and plan activities aimed at their implementation, understanding the need for self-education and continuous improvement of qualifications, including practical language competences (K1_U12);

SOCIAL COMPETENCE

After participating in the course, the student:

- is ready to adequately identify and resolve the dilemmas of inter-linguistic communication caused by the asymmetry of linguistic systems and cultural differences, respecting ethical behavior patterns and consulting experts (K1_K01);

- is ready to participate in the cultural life of the region, country and Europe, using both traditional and modern forms and media (K1_K03);

- is ready to take actions in inter-lingual / multilingual communication to preserve the cultural heritage of a given region or country (K1_K04);

- is ready to lead the group responsibly, assuming responsibility for the results of its work (K1_K05)

- is ready to cooperate and work in a group (K1_K06)
