Specialist translation written / interpreting C1 - German language, level 1

obligatory courses

Compulsory subject for first-year students (second-cycle).

Knowledge of the language of students is at B2+ level.

Knowledge of grammar structures and the lexical connections between the Polish and the German language;the principles of formulating longer expressions in the target language, also official language; ability of using information connected with the cultural aspects, that are characteristic for the initial and the target culture; technical competence: doing translation with the help of technical sources.

Classroom

Classes are intended for first-year students of second-cycle studies, for whom German is the first language of specialization.

Developing and improving the translation competence

The basic aim of the course is the transfer of meaning of the expression in the original language to the target language so that the text is created in accordance with the rules of the system of the target language.

Within this course the student should gain an idea about the basic terminology of a subject. Their get to know different kinds of texts for special purposes. Translation strategies are presented to the students, with which they will be able to do effecting translation of texts for special purposes.

Course Workload:

Total: 4 ECTS, including

Classroom activities – 60 hrs (2 ECTS)

Self-study – 50 hrs = 2 ECTS

including:

- preparation for the lessons- 35 hrs

- preparation for tasks verifying the learning outcomes – 15 hrs

If classroom learning is impossible, the classes will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and other tools recommended by the University.

KNOWLEDGE

The student is expected to

- know the extended terminology of applied linguistics (including translations) (K2_W02);

- have in-depth knowledge of the language phenomenon, its complexity and historical variability (K2 _W01)

- know different translation-techniques (also in the field of textes for special purposes) (S2.1-W02)

SKILLS:

The student is expected to

- be able to prepare various types of scholar written studies in Polish and German language (K2_U03);

- be able to demonstrate language performance at C level according to Council of Europe Framework of Reference (K2_U07)

- translate efficiently texts into the target language using professional terminology, idiom, style and register (S2.1_U01)

- be able to use dictionary and text sources to solve language problems (S2.1_U02);

SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPETENCY:

The student

- can properly identify and resolve the dilemmas of interlingual communication (K2_K03);

- can develop and improve acquired knowledge in Polish and German language (S2.1_K02);

- can interact and work in a group, taking different roles in it (including the role of a translator/interpreter) (S2.1_K07);

Methods of evaluating the work of students:

- steady evaluation (activity), preparation for the lessons, homeworks

- mid-semester exam and final written exam.

Assessment criteria:

The final grade comprises:

- steady evaluation (activity) – 50%

- written exam – 50%.

The overall result is established in accordance with the following scale:

51%-60% = 3

61%-70% = 3+

71%-80% = 4

81%-90% = 4+

91%-100% = 5

The conditions of a positive mark is regular taking part in the classes and written translation of texts done in the classes. (three unauthorized absences allowed in the semester)
